The Nissan Rogue just earned the highest initial quality rating in the compact SUV segment in J.D. Power's 2026 U.S. Initial Quality Study, finishing ahead of the Ford Escape and Buick Envision.

The annual study measures problems reported by owners during the first 90 days of ownership. For the 2026 edition, J.D. Power surveyed 78,514 owners and lessees of new model-year vehicles, evaluating issues across 10 categories including infotainment, powertrain, interior quality, driving experience, and vehicle controls.

In the compact SUV segment, the rankings were:

  • Nissan Rogue
  • Ford Escape (tie)
  • Buick Envision (tie)

The results are a stark contrast to the sales rankings, where the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V absolutely dominate the segment. While both have strong reputations for long-term reliability and resale value, neither finished among the top-ranked compact SUVs for initial quality.

Nissan's segment win also helped the brand finish second among mass-market automakers in the overall J.D. Power rankings. Ford claimed the top spot among mainstream brands, while Buick finished third.

10. Buick Envision

The Rogue's result comes despite recent attention surrounding its turbocharged three-cylinder engine. Nissan has issued recalls and extended warranty coverage for certain models after reports of engine failures. However, those issues generally develop later in a vehicle's life and are not reflected in J.D. Power's initial quality study, which only measures the first 90 days of ownership.

The Ford Escape's strong showing is bittersweet given Ford will be discontinuing the model shortly.

It's worth noting that initial quality and long-term reliability measure different aspects of ownership. J.D. Power's Initial Quality Study focuses on defects and owner-reported issues shortly after purchase, while long-term dependability studies track how vehicles perform over several years. As a result, a vehicle that scores well in one study may not necessarily lead the other.
