After skipping 2025 entirely – the Mix Fold 4 was a 2024 creation – Xiaomi might be ready to drop a new high-end foldable pretty soon.
Will it go toe to toe with Samsung's latest Galaxy Z foldable masterpieces? Oh, yes. Furthermore, it'll compete directly with the wider-than-taller Galaxy Z Fold 8 – the one that looks like a passport when folded and unfolds to a rectangular (much better for video) aspect ratio.
To make things even spicier, Xiaomi has apparently decided not to go with a Snapdragon (or a Dimensity) chipset. Instead, Xiaomi might be homecooking its own silicon.
No coincidences
Per the latest reports, the Xiaomi Mix Fold 5 and the Redmi Note 17 series have just passed market certifications, which means they're almost ready to be unveiled and sold across the world.
The foldable apparently comes with a wider-than-taller form factor, which, as stated above, isn't a coincidence. It'll compete not just with the brand-new Galaxy Z Fold 8, but with Apple's iPhone Ultra, the first-ever foldable iPhone which will also adopt the new aspect ratio.
A cool display
The upcoming Xiaomi Mix Fold 5 could have an (unfolded) inner screen of 7.6 inches, which means you'll enjoy your videos and photos way better than on your TV remote-like slab phone.
Of course, if you have to quickly check a thing or two, you won't need to unfold anything, as the outer screen will be enough, albeit being significantly smaller than the one found on the inside.
The important part
Based on earlier leaks, Xiaomi is expected to unveil its new flagship foldable in August or September, when we're expecting phone goodies from Google (the Pixel 11 family) and Apple (the iPhone 18 Pro Max and Cupertino's foldable).
The Mix Fold 5 is rumored to be powered by Xiaomi's own 3nm chipset, likely called the Xuanjie O3.
Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun has previously highlighted the importance of the company's chip efforts, saying that only four companies in the world can build flagship smartphone chips, and Xiaomi is the "only one in mainland China".
What else is there?
The phone could also feature a top-tier camera system, but nothing is certain right now.
The device is also claimed to pack a battery of around 6,000mAh – much more than the Z Fold 8's 4,800 mAh. As for the price, current rumors suggest the Xiaomi MIX Fold 5 could start at around 10,000 yuan (or ~$1,470 when directly converted) – yeah, it won't be cheap at all.
Such a price would not be surprising, as the cost of key components has continued to rise this year. Smartphone makers are finding it harder to invest heavily in research and development while keeping prices unchanged, especially for their flagships.
