The Weather Channel’s '80s design revival is the perfect barometer of what people want in 2026

The Weather Channel retro 90s UI design

100% chance of nostalgia.

The forecast's telling me that it's going to be cloudy with a chance of pixels, but it's hard to be disappointed by the news when it comes via such charming retro UI design. The Weather Channel's '80s aesthetic is back, and it's going down a storm.

The brand's RetroCast feature can be toggled on and off in its iOS and Android apps or viewed in-browser, where things get even more nostalgic. On the website, You can select a location to view local and regional weather data on a loop like it was on television form, with smooth jazz playing in the background for added vibes.

In an era of sleek and minimalist app design, the revival has tapped into the consumer longing for simpler times, suggesting that nostalgia become the ultimate user experience.

RetroCast was designed to authentically replicate the Weather Channel's TV graphics from the 1980s and 1990s. Pixelated icons accompany a largely text-based forecast.

The reaction has been huge, especially among millennials, who remember the original cable broadcast marking their day's rhythm, often watched on loop to kill time. The brand's post above on TikTok racked up 250K likes and over a thousand of comments, with many people sharing screenshots of the updated app on their phones.

Lee Martin, the designer who worked on the project, notes on Instagram that there are already several fan-built emulators around. He aimed to set the official RetroCast apart with a retrofuturist approach.

"What if technology evolved but the Weather Channel aesthetic did not? How would I recreate this format using best practices within the confines of a 90s design language?" he asked himself.

Lee says he spent hours sketching ideas for how the classic 4:3 TV ratio could be made responsive for mobile screens before he engineered a broadcast system that would autoplay the visuals on the 8 seconds (08, 18, 28, etc) like the original loop.

Although it feels like a video broadcast, the app is all HTML, CSS and Javascript. It was developed with the JavaScript frameworks Vue 3 and Nuxt 4, with all of the data coming from the Weather Channel API. Lee laid out the screen evolutions beside screenshots from original broadcasts in Figma, one of the best UI design tools, to compare them in order to ensure authenticity.

The feature is already available in 20 languages, including Arabic RTL support, making it more global than the Weather Channel's original product.

Why are people so obsessed with the Weather Channel’s CRT aesthetic? The reception could be a barometer of what people want right now: a convenient technological tool that quickly provides the information they need but offers a sense of calm by harking back to slower times. It turns out that going lo-fi could be one of the savviest brand pivots of the year.
