The Rookie may not be returning until 2027, but filming is underway as of Tuesday, July 21.
“It’s going to be exciting. It’ll be thrilling and emotional and just pushing boundaries as we always try and do, do some stuff we haven’t done before. We never go into a fresh season going, let’s just do what we did last year,” showrunner Alexi Hawley told TV Insider while discussing the extended Season 8 episode now streaming on Hulu. So, some new characters, some new storylines, some new dangers and intentions and all that kind of stuff.”
Season 8 left off with quite the major cliffhanger. After Tim (Eric Winter) proposed to Lucy (Melissa O’Neil) and she said yes, both were kidnapped by people working for international crime boss Heath Everett (Jeffrey Vincent Parise). That ending suggests that not much time can pass between seasons … right? Right.
“It’s not immediately,” Hawley said, “It’s within a couple of weeks ultimately, maybe a little in between a week and two weeks.”
When we spoke with him after the Season 8 finale, he agreed that there’s a reason they were taken and not killed and left there on the beach.
“I think we should be worried for sure. I mean, as a show, we definitely push the envelope with some of our characters and stuff like that. And there are real stakes on the show. That said, I also don’t want to send the internet scrambling and freaking out too much, but I do think that, yes, that the stakes are real,” he said.
Winter also shared with us his thoughts on where The Rookie Season 9 should pick up with his and O’Neil’s characters.
“I have no clue how we start, but I do feel there’s a world in which they should show up in separate locations. I don’t think they should be kidnapped in the same place. I think that’ll increase the stakes. It will be incredibly dramatic,” he said in May. “What happened to each person? How do I get out? Whereas if we’re together, then there’s going to be teamwork. Obviously, people are going to come in and help us out. Hopefully, Tim doesn’t die. I don’t know.”
