Liverpool appear to be close to agreement for a deal to sell local-born midfielder Tommy Pilling to Slovakian first division side MFK Zemplín Michalovce.
The scouser joined the club at the age of five-years-old, and the move represents the conclusion of a 16-year association with the Reds for one of their longest-serving academy players.
At first glance, a move away from Liverpool out of the English academy system may appear as a significant step down for a player who has spent his entire childhood developing within one of Europe’s biggest academies.
That is especially given that the youngster has been involved in both the U18s and the U21s for the Reds and would have been oriented to fit the Liverpool style and philosophy that has been engrained in youngsters and trickled down from the senior team into the youth ranks.
However, Pilling’s departure could instead highlight a growing trend at Anfield: making difficult decisions to prioritise the long-term development of young players.
The trend for English players to continue the trajectories of their careers abroad has not been uncommon, even at a more senior level. For example, Jadon Sancho rebuilt his career at Borussia Dortmund after leaving Manchester City, while England World Cup starter Noni Madueke used PSV as a stepping stone before returning to Chelsea
Whilst moves to the Slovakian division may seem more uncommon, Zemplín Michalovce have built an English core by targeting undervalued Premier League academy prospects and providing them a unique pathway to European first-team football.
Amongst these names to make the move abroad are former Arsenal academy graduates Kido Taylor-Hart and Ben Cottrell, both of whom are enjoying first-team minutes at the club alongside former Barnet youngster Kai Brosnan.
Pilling was left out of Andoni Iraola’s pre-season tour squad this summer, and with opportunities in Liverpool’s first team becoming increasingly difficult to secure, a move elsewhere could provide the regular senior football that others have likewise sought to continue progressing up the ranks.
The 21-year-old has progressed through every stage of the youth system with the Reds, captaining the U18 side. With his great-grandfather Jack Pilling having represented Liverpool in more than 100 wartime fixtures during the 1940s, the midfielder carries a strong connection to the club that will be hard to leave behind.
Despite impressing at youth level as a versatile player that could be utilised on the left side of a midfield four and even as a No.9, a pathway into Liverpool’s senior squad remained difficult. Pilling was named on Arne Slot’s bench twice during last season’s Carabao Cup run against Southampton and Crystal Palace but was unable to make his first-team debut.
Those matches represented opportunities where Liverpool were willing to trust academy players, with Trey Nyoni, Amara Nallo, Trent Kane-Doherty and Kieran Morrison all receiving senior opportunities across the two fixtures.
Liverpool are also reportedly exploring potential departures for other young talents, including Nallo, Kyle Kelly, Lucas Figueroa and Kornel Misciur.
Rather than signalling a lack of faith in their academy, the moves appear to reflect a more proactive approach, ensuring promising youngsters have a realistic pathway into senior football or move to environments where regular senior opportunities are more readily available.
At the same time, the club have continued to invest heavily in their youth pipeline with recent additions such as Dara Jikiemi, Mor Talla Ndiaye, Ifeanyi Ndukwe, Noah Adekoya and the recent signing of Colombian wonderkid Samuel Martínez, strengthening the next generation coming through.
Liverpool’s summer transition period is therefore not only taking place at first-team level but throughout the entire structure of the club.
Pilling’s exit, if it goes through, will sting. Sixteen years is a long time to call somewhere home, but sometimes the most loyal thing a club can do for a boyhood player is set him free to actually play.
