The Story Behind This Hidden Legend in Wisconsin
You’ll find Devil's Punchbowl Nature Preserve just a few minutes outside of Menomonie, and it won’t take you long to notice that a visit here is a little different from your typical Wisconsin hike. For years, locals have whispered stories about what happens in this here after the sun goes down. They most commonly revolve around mysterious, glowing orbs of light floating through the gorge.
If floating lights aren't creepy enough, older tales claim that the tiny, deep caves pockmarking the sandstone walls are actually home to gnomes, trolls, and other woodland cryptids. Some visitors swear they've heard disembodied whispers echoing off the walls when they stand alone at the bottom of the bowl. Even if you don't believe in the supernatural, the unique acoustics and lack of light in the gorge make it easy to see how these legends in Wisconsin got their start.
What Makes the Devil's Punchbowl So Unique
Legends aside, the Devil's Punchbowl’s unusual geology makes it one of the most unique places in Wisconsin. Thousands of years ago, swirling glacial meltwater carved this deep, round bowl out of the sandstone bedrock. What To Expect During Your Visit
Getting to the bottom requires a trip down a steep wooden staircase that, thanks to the constant moisture, can be slick-so you’ll want to wear shoes with good traction. Once in the punchbowl, you can explore the hollows and crannies where the gnomes and fairies are said to live and see for yourself if there’s any evidence backing up the legends.
During the winter, the trickling waterfall and dripping sandstone freeze into a striking wall of ice, making Devil’s Punchbowl a spectacular (though icy) year-round destination. Keep in mind that parking is fairly limited, so be prepared for that. Also, Devil’s Punchbowl is a fragile ecosystem, so stay on designated trails and tread lightly. Managed by the Landmark Conservancy, the preserve is intended to remain in as natural a state as possible, so you won’t find visitor centers or gift shops here, just nature at its best-and perhaps a mysterious being or two.
