David Holmes’ Life-Changing Accident On The ‘Harry Potter’ Set
Holmes, a former gymnast, served as Radcliffe’s stunt double from the very first ‘Harry Potter’ film. In January 2009, Holmes was rehearsing for the scene in ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1,’ in which Nagini attacks Harry and hurls him backward.
The stunt used a cable pulley system designed to pull Holmes into a crash mat. During the rehearsal, the crew loaded too much weight onto the rig, sending Holmes hurtling backward at a much higher speed than intended.
Holmes later recalled remaining conscious throughout the accident as he slammed into a wall, suffering a broken neck that left him permanently paralyzed. Even worse? His condition worsened over the years.
Although he initially retained movement in his head, neck, and both arms, later complications reduced his mobility further. Today, Holmes can move only his left arm and has spoken openly about living with the fear that the paralysis could continue to spread.
Despite the life-changing injury, Holmes never focused on assigning blame. In the documentary ‘David Holmes: The Boy Who Lived,’ he described the accident as “a catalog of errors” rather than the fault of any single individual.
He chose not to pursue a major lawsuit, believing that dwelling on blame would not change his circumstances. Meanwhile, Radcliffe never let his friendship with Holmes end after production on the ‘Harry Potter’ films wrapped.

In 2010, Radcliffe hosted a charity dinner and auction to help raise money for Holmes’ ongoing care. More than a decade later, he took on an even bigger role by serving as an executive producer on HBO’s 2023 documentary ‘David Holmes: The Boy Who Lived.’
