Every few years another survey crowns a winner. Then another publication picks someone else. The result is a cheerful rivalry that keeps locals smiling and proudly polishing their town signs.
WHICH BEST TOWN DESERVES THE CROWN?
The truth is that South Africa has no shortage of contenders. Daily Maverick’s Small Town of the Year Awards ranked Barrydale first with 94%, followed by White River on 93%, Jeffreys Bay on 90.3%, Cullinan on 89.3% and Clarens on 88%. Bloemhof, Howick and Hoedspruit also made the top eight.
Judges looked at nature, connectedness and the famous “M-Factor”, which measures community spirit.
Other organisations have reached different conclusions. ARMOUR noted that Greyton, Kroonstad, Delmas, Heidelberg and Bloemhof have all won recognition as South Africa’s best small town over recent years.
That alone proves one point. Picking the best town depends as much on the judge as the place itself.
WHY DOES BEST TOWN MEAN DIFFERENT THINGS?
White River has a strong case. The Mpumalanga town combines farming, tourism and an active arts community. It also sits at the heart of South Africa’s macadamia industry. South Africa produced an estimated 90 000 to 94 000 tonnes of macadamias in 2025, worth between R5.5 billion and R6.8 billion.
White River is home to the world’s largest macadamia processing facility, helping more value remain in the local economy.
Hoedspruit offers a different lifestyle. It serves as a gateway to the Greater Kruger and the Blyde River Canyon. Wildlife often beats traffic jams there. Residents swap shopping malls for bush sunsets. The town earned praise for safety, community spirit and access to nature, making it a favourite among outdoor lovers.
Someone else might argue for Clarens because of its galleries. Another might pick Jeffreys Bay for surfing. A history fan could vote for Cullinan.
Each choice reflects a lifestyle rather than a league table.
WHAT SHOULD YOU LOOK FOR?
Perhaps the best small town is simply the one that fits your daily routine.
Do you want schools within walking distance? Do you dream of mountain trails, bird calls or coffee shops where everyone knows your name?
Maybe reliable internet matters more than wildlife. Perhaps neighbours who greet you every morning deserve extra points.
South Africans and expats often chase the perfect postcode, and in the process they may discover what works for them.
The country’s best town is probably the one that feels like home, even if another survey disagrees.
After all, no trophy can settle an argument that ends with a friendly braai…
