The Elder Scrolls 6 official release date update is music to our ears

The Elder Scrolls 6 Official Release Date Update Is Music To Our Ears

The Elder Scrolls VI's fate has been left sort of up to fans' imaginations until now, as Bethesda finally officially addresses where it's at.

The Elder Scrolls 6 was announced eight years ago at E3 2018, and, since then, things have been fairly quiet. While anticipation for it has remained extraordinarily high, so little was shown in The Elder Scrolls 6’s cinematic announcement teaser that it’s been difficult to truly be excited beyond the fact that it’s our newest Elder Scrolls game, and each year that passes by without an encouraging update risks seeming like a bad omen.

Recently, a significant Xbox overhaul reportedly saw studios being divested, thousands of staff being laid off, and a focus on Bethesda’s biggest brands being emphasized. Now, Bethesda has stepped into the light to officially address this and explain what the status of The Elder Scrolls 6 is after all this time.

On Twitter/X, Bethesda shared a lengthy memo on what fans can expect from the studio and its output of games for the foreseeable future. Here, it seems like The Elder Scrolls VI’s development is par for the course:

The Elder Scrolls VI is our primary development focus today, with the majority of our team currently working on the next chapter of the franchise. With over 65 million copies sold, players are still exploring Skyrim 15 years later, but we know it’s been a very long wait for the sequel.

The next chapter is on the way. We’re where we planned to be, loving how it looks, and playing it every day.

With so many other games that are in the works from across all of its other IPs, Bethesda understands how profound The Elder Scrolls’ legacy is. There’s no telling when it might be released, yet it will hopefully have as much legroom as it needs in order to deliver on an epic that can meet the impossibly high bar Bethesda set with The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

Bethesda admitting that The Elder Scrolls VI is at a point in development where it “planned to be” would appear quite odd, considering that it’s been nearly a decade, and with no release window in sight. It’s reassuring to hear that The Elder Scrolls 6 isn’t falling behind on schedule, of course, and that Bethesda’s upcoming fantasy RPG is its “primary development focus today.” All the same, this ultimately doesn’t tell us anything we didn’t already know about The Elder Scrolls VI.

Fans should steel themselves for a wait that could be anywhere from a year to many more, and know that Bethesda certainly won’t announce or reveal something about The Elder Scrolls 6 again until it’s prepared to do so. Meanwhile, Bethesda’s plate is clearly full, and it’s wonderful to see that The Elder Scrolls 6 will help lead the studio into a potentially bright future.
