Square Enix Officially Surprises Fans By Bringing 2 Classic RPGs to Switch 2 October 2026

Square Enix is bringing 2 RPGs to the Switch 2 and giving them a much-needed upgrade.

Square Enix is bringing two beloved RPGs to the Switch 2. It's the 8th anniversary of the Octopath Traveler series, and to celebrate, the company is releasing both Octopath TravelerI and II on the Nintendo Switch 2 on October 1st 2026.

This announcement comes on the heels of the release of the prequel game Octopath Traveler 0, which came out in December 2025. Octopath Traveler has grown to become one of Square Enix's most beloved franchises, and hopefully, these two releases won't be the last Octopath Traveler games on the Switch 2.

Octopath Traveler I and II are both coming to Switch 2, and the new releases will be better than ever. Both games will be optimized for Switch 2 so that they can fully take advantage of Nintendo's new hardware. It's a great opportunity to experience two of the best turn-based RPGs of the 21st century.

The Octopath Traveler franchise got its start in 2018, when the first entry in the series was released worldwide. It was Square Enix’s first title to use the now-famous HD-2D visual style, which places pixel-art characters within detailed 3D environments enhanced by modern lighting and visual effects. The result resembles a carefully constructed diorama while retaining the nostalgic look of a 16-bit RPG.

True to its name, Octopath Traveler follows eight protagonists, and players can choose which character to begin with before completing their stories in almost any order. Each hero has a distinct job and a unique Path Action that can be used when interacting with NPCs, which makes switching between characters all the more interesting.

Released in 2023, Octopath Traveler II is a standalone sequel featuring a new setting and cast rather than a direct continuation of the first game. It retained the original’s HD-2D presentation as well as its eight-character structure, but expanded the formula with interconnected story chapters and day-and-night Path Actions.

2025's Octopath Traveler 0 was actually an adaptation of a mobile game, Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent, but it turned out to be one of the best entries in the series yet, with more than 30 recruitable characters. With more than 100 hours of gameplay, it's a truly meaty RPG, and its success proved that the Octopath Traveler franchise had real staying power.

Square Enix temporarily delisted Octopath Traveler from the Nintendo eShop in 2024, when they took over as the game's publisher, but this upcoming release proves the series is alive and well on Nintendo consoles. While Square Enix hasn't announced the next Octopath Traveler game just yet, it looks like the franchise is set to thrive on the Switch 2.
