The 6 best lightweight comforters—tested and reviewed

1
DARIA SMITH FOR READER'S DIGEST

Snuggle up without breaking a sweat with these lightweight comforters! Highlights Our team of editors and testers compared notes in order to find the best cooling comforters. Our top pick is the Cozy Earth comforter. This moisture-wicking comforter is impossibly soft and regulates body temperatures year-round. We found several low-maintenance options that are machine washable and don’t require a duvet cover including the Rest Evercool and Sunday...

Best overall

Cozy Earth Comforter

This lightweight comforter regulates temperature year-round

Pros:

  • Temperature-regulating year-round
  • Moisture wicking
  • Multiple fabric and fill options to choose from
  • Breathable
  • Lightweight
  • Impossibly soft
  • Corner loops to attach inside a duvet cover

Cons:

  • Needs a duvet cover

The silk variation of the Cozy Earth comforter is the pinnacle of all lightweight comforters. The material’s breathability and moisture-wicking ability easily regulate body temperature in any season. Its thinner profile is soft and body contouring without adding extra weight. Pair it with a window air conditioner and summer won’t stand a chance.

I’ve been sleeping with this comforter for five years now and I’m still not over the sheer magic of it. It’s warm and cozy in the cooler months but somehow lightweight and cool in the summer. My only complaint is that it’s so soft, silky and perfect that I have to wrangle it into a duvet cover in order to keep it protected. The corner loops make it easy to attach, but I am a bit put out by the whole process. Especially since I did start swapping out my silk comforter with Cozy Earth’s down alternative comforter during the cold winter months and have to deal with duvet covers multiple times throughout the year. That said, this comforter is 100% worth protecting. But don’t just take my word for it. Tester Daria Smith is also a fan and likens the comforter to a cloud.

“Both the silk and bamboo comforters are breathable, moisture-wicking, temperature-regulating (regardless of the season) and oh-so-soft. It feels like you’re enveloped in a cloud,” writes Daria in her full Cozy Earth comforter review. “On cooler nights, I’m warm. On summer nights, it’s breathable, and I don’t overheat—making it the best lightweight comforter. It’s the perfect temperature for every type of sleeper.”

Mellow MarshMellow Comforter

This TikTok famous comforter definitely lives up to the hype.

Pros:

  • Wallet-friendly price
  • Machine washable
  • Hypoallergenic and antibacterial
  • Stylish design and 5 color options
  • Oeko-Tex certified to meet high safety and environmental standards
  • Super soft, lightweight and breathable
  • Box-stitch design prevents clumping

Cons:

  • Made almost entirely of polyester

Budget-friendly comforters don’t have to look cheap. In fact, with its box-stitch construction and five soft hues, this trending MarshMellow comforter looks incredibly chic. Plus, it’s the number one trending comforter on the TikTok shop, so you can rest easy (pun intended) that this lightweight comforter delivers on all its promises.

My tween daughter has slowly but surely been transforming her room, removing all of the pretty pink things I carefully and lovingly selected and replacing them with more grown-up picks. After hearing about this “viral comforter” from her friends, she had to have one too. I ordered the full/queen size in sand for her full size bed. I’m always skeptical of viral or trendy products but this one surprised me!

It is incredibly soft and lightweight, though it does have a bit of heft to it. My daughter, who loves all things cozy, was immediately smitten with it. The MarshMellow comforter is also cool to the touch, which is a bonus since she runs hot at night.

My only gripe is that this comforter is made with 95% polyester and 5% spandex. Over the past couple of years I’ve been trying to move away from synthetic materials and plastics, so I would have really loved if this comforter was made with natural fibers.

Best luxury

Sunday Citizen Snug Comforter

This ultra-luxe comforter is lightweight, super soft, and designed to last forver.

Pros:

  • All-in-one design eliminates the need for multi-part bedding
  • Temperature regulating
  • Incredibly soft, plush top side
  • Machine washable
  • Nine color options
  • No duvet cover required
  • Low maintenance

Cons:

  • Pricey (but worth it!)

Sunday Citizen’s Snug Comforter is truly the ultimate in lightweight luxury. We especially love its double-sided design. One side is soft and snuggly microfiber while the cooling side is viscose from bamboo. In addition to bamboo, the comforter is sustainably made from over 50 recycled plastic bottles and comes with multiple eco-friendly certifications. It lays on the bed much like a standard down comforter and, according to shopping editor Mary Henn, feels as good as a luxe hotel comforter.

“It’s snuggly, soft and just heavy enough to provide that hotel comforter feel. You know what I mean—it provides warmth and coziness when the AC is blasting, but it’s not heavy enough to make you sweat under the covers on warmer nights,” Mary writes in her Sunday Citizen Snug Comforter review. “I turn it over depending on the season.”

Best of all, it’s a very low-maintenance option. Its all-in-one design eliminates the need for multi-part bedding. No duvet covers, quilts or blankets required. It’s also machine washable which means no costly trips to the dry cleaners. “As far as washing goes, the Snug Comforter does hold up in the washing machine. In fact, it came out looking almost brand new,” raves Mary.

The only thing to consider is how you want your bedding to look. Mary, who prefers oversized, drape-y bedding, found the full/queen size comforter to be shorter than she would have liked. “the full/queen size would probably look best on a full-size mattress,” she explains. “If you want an oversized look on a queen mattress, you could opt for the king size.” That said, Mary is happy to overlook this small detail given the comforter’s softness, sustainability and low maintenance.

Best cooling

Rest Evercool Cooling Comforter

Kiss night sweats goodbye with this cool-to-the-touch comforter.

Pros:

  • Material feels cool to the touch
  • Absorbs sweat and moisture
  • Machine washable
  • Available in six colors
  • Reversible
  • Hypoallergenic
  • Doesn't wrinkle

Cons:

  • May slide around at night

If you’re a human furnace, then Rest’s Evercool Cooling Comforter is your holy grail. That’s because this comforter is actually cool-to-the-touch. It’s thoughtfully made with a proprietary fabric that has a high thermal conductivity. That means it doesn’t draw warmth from your body as much as traditional blankets and comforters do. And while many comforters are filled with down or a synthetic fiber filler, the Evercool is filled with a plant-based, non-toxic Sorona filling. It stopped our tester’s night sweats in their tracks.

“I’m a hot sleeper who frequently sweats at night,” explains tester Caroline Lubinsky in her Evercool review. “Rather than sweating profusely next to an overly warm boyfriend and large dog, I slept comfortably without tossing, turning, frantically fanning my bedding or bothering either of them. I woke up well-rested with dry pajamas, and quite pleased with my new cooling comforter.”

Best thin

Buffy Cloud Comforter

This cozy, lightweight comforter will kept keep hot sleepers cool all through the night.

Pros:

  • Thin profile
  • Made for all-season use
  • Soft to the touch
  • Hypoallergenic
  • Moisture wicking
  • Machine washable
  • Corner loops to attach inside a duvet cover

Cons:

  • Runs smaller than expected

The best lightweight comforters are comfortable, keep you dry all night long and help you get a deeper night’s sleep—something we all need! This lauded Buffy Cloud comforter does just that. It features a lightweight, thin profile and is made with ultra-soft fabric. Its inner fibers are webbed to help prevent it from clumping up even after washing. And yep! This thin comforter is indeed machine washable.

According to tester Mary Henn, this comforter definitely lives up to its hype. “I love the Buffy Cloud Comforter. It has all the features I look for in a comforter. It’s soft, breathable, washable and cozy,” she raves in her Buffy review. “Plus, it’s made sustainably. If you’re looking for a lightweight, down-alternative comforter or duvet insert at a reasonable price, you’ll be pleased with the Cloud Comforter.” Pair it with a bed cooling system and say farewell to sweaty slumbers.

The only thing Mary would change is the sizing. “My only qualm with the Cloud Comforter is that it runs smaller than I’d like,” she explains. “I sized up to get the look I wanted. But if you’re buying for a king-size bed, you may find that the king size is a bit smaller than you’d like. I would love for Buffy to make an additional larger size or two for those with larger beds who like an oversized comforter.”

Slumber Cloud Lightweight Comforter

This comforter boasts NASA-approved ClimaDry by Outlast technology to keep you cool all night long.

Pros:

  • 100% cotton outer cover
  • Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certification
  • Machine washable and dryer friendly
  • Hypoallergenic

Cons:

  • Not available in twin or twin XL

Patented, NASA-approved ClimaDry by Outlast technology, sturdy box-quilt stitching and a super-soft 300-thread-count cotton cover make Slumber Cloud’s lightweight comforter a must-have for hot sleepers. Senior editor Dawn Yanek calls this lightweight cotton comforter a well-made, unassuming little comforter and hailed its cooling abilities.

“Maybe this worked too well—we were both chilly at night,” she says in her review. “Part of this may be because it wasn’t yet summer and was chilly in our house, but we ended up layering another quilt on top of it to bring it to a better temperature for us. As the weather started getting a little warmer, we were a lot more comfortable, and our body temperatures felt more regulated during the course of the night…my husband said that he slept comfortably all night long—and didn’t wake up hot and wanting to throw off the covers at any point like he sometimes does with our regular comforter.”

The only downside is the ultra-thin profile. Dawn prefers a cozy, cushy comforter experience which this blanket did not deliver. “It was pretty thin, so you don’t get that cozy, cushy, comfy look. It provided a more minimalist and sleek feel, like a quilt (and under a quilt),” she explains. And though it does have corner loops for a duvet cover, Dawn doubts it would be able to adequately fill the space since it’s just ¼-inch thick.

What to look for when buying a lightweight comforter

“Consider material, breathability, moisture-wicking properties and your personal sleeping temperature,” explains Kahn. “These factors contribute to thermal comfort, affecting sleep quality.” Don’t forget to also consider weight, type of fill, weave, stitching, the GSM and thread count. You’ll also want to take into consideration whether you’re buying a lightweight summer comforter or searching for something more appropriate for year-round use. Of course, your sleeping type and personal preferences will also play a factor.

Additional considerations include the comforter’s price, aesthetics, size, color and design. While you want it to feel good, style influences many people’s purchases. Art and design have a significant impact on mental health, as recognized by feng shui practitioners. Choosing something pleasing to the eye helps promote a more restful night’s sleep.

Types of lightweight comforters

  • Down: Down is known for its excellent insulation properties while still being lightweight. It offers cozy and plush comfort without feeling too heavy or bulky.
  • Down-alternative: Down-alternatives are made from synthetic materials that feature increased airflow. They’re typically hypoallergenic, making them suitable for people with allergies.
  • Wool: Wool is an organic option that regulates temperature well. Moisture-wicking properties make this fill a viable option for warm weather.
  • Cotton: Cotton is a natural fiber known for its breathability, softness and moisture-wicking properties. Comforters with cotton fill are affordable, which also makes them popular.
  • Silk: Silk has natural thermoregulation properties. Plus, it is light and airy, and easily wicks away moisture.

How we found the best lightweight comforters

To find the best lightweight comforters on the market, we gathered dozens of consumer-loved picks and personally tested those that met our initial criteria. We analyzed them for material, quality, price point and performance. Not everyone is going to enjoy the same sort of lightweight comforter. As Kahn says, “Comfort and thermal comfort are highly subjective.” So we gathered a healthy variety in order to cut down all those options into a solid six picks.

FAQ

What is the lightest material for a comforter?

“Materials like cotton, bamboo or certain synthetic blends known for breathability and moisture-wicking properties are often recommended. The ‘best’ material varies based on individual comfort and temperature preferences,” Kahn says.

Silk and eucalyptus are other top options for lightweight comforters, as the luxurious, soft fabrics have moisture-wicking properties for cooling comfort.

What is the best comforter for hot sleepers?

The best bedding for hot sleepers usually features cooling and moisture-wicking technologies that evaporate sweat. Comforters within a GSM of 200 to 700 that have lower fill power optimally serve hot sleepers. Bedding with lower thread counts also helps keep the body cool by allowing more air to pass through the materials.

What is the coolest type of comforter?

Thinner comforters that have lower fill powers and GSM numbers are the coolest type of comforter. Comforters made with bamboo, lyocell, cotton and linen are known to be breathable and moisture-wicking. Percale is another cool choice with a crisp, lightweight feel that provides comfort for all seasons. A sateen weave creates a smooth and shiny silk-like surface, another popular pick for the best lightweight comforters.
