The 6 best frozen treats to buy at Walmart this summer — all under $5

Across the board, Walmart is huge — it’s the largest grocery chain in the United States by revenue, has over 4,000 locations in the United States, and its supercenters average 182,000 square feet each. Walmart’s inventory is, appropriately, massive too. 

On the retailer’s website, you’re faced with over 1,000 options for ice cream and other frozen desserts alone. That number varies by store location and decreases if you’re shopping in person, but regardless, you’ll be faced with a staggering number of popsicles, ice cream sandwiches, and pints to choose from while strolling through Walmart's freezer aisles. 

As we face a summer of record-setting temperatures, it’s the perfect time to stock our freezers with affordable, ice-cold desserts. To help you find the best treat to chill out with, Food & Wine asked Morgan Chomps (@morganchompz) — a content creator and Walmart superfan known for her reviews of the store’s products — to share her favorite frozen desserts from the major chain.

These are the six items she recommends snagging on your next trip to Walmart.

Bettergoods Plant-Based Blueberry Swirl Non-Dairy Frozen Dessert

Bettergoods is Walmart’s newest private-label brand, focusing on growing consumer interests such as trending flavors and dietary restrictions. Ringing in at under $4 for a pint, the brand’s Plant-Based Blueberry Swirl Non-Dairy Frozen Dessert is made with oat milk and uses both fresh berries and jam for plenty of fruity flavor. It’s vegan and gluten-free, and Chomps tells us, “You would never know this is non-dairy.” The creator loves that this ice cream is simple, accessible, and a slightly less common flavor than the standard strawberry ice cream.

Snickers Ice Cream Minis Caramel Peanut Butter Ice Cream Bars with M&M's Minis

Snickers released five versions of these “Ice Cream Minis” earlier this year, but the M&M flavor is exclusive to Walmart. According to Chomps, “I love candy as a mix-in in my ice cream, and these Snickers ice cream bars basically combine all [of my] favorites into one dessert!”

Each fun-sized bar features peanut butter ice cream, caramel, and mini M&Ms, all encased in a chocolate shell. You’ll get 10 handheld treats in each box for a little under $5, making them perfect for any parties you’re hosting this summer.

Great Value Birthday Cake Ice Cream Cups

Chomps notes that the Great Value Birthday Cake Ice Cream Cups “have the most delicious white cake-flavored ice cream, but I think most people overlook them because they don’t appear to be much. Do not discount what they look like, though; they’re a hidden gem!”

The 3-ounce individual ice cream cups are great for large gatherings or simply stocking your freezer with single-serving desserts. Each cup is filled with cake-flavored ice cream studded with rainbow confetti sprinkles and purple frosting swirls. At just $4.50 for 12 cups, this dessert is an absolute steal.

Budget Saver Root Beer Twin Pops

Walmart carries a variety of Twin Pops — simple popsicles with two sticks in each treat — in flavors like watermelon, grape, and blue raspberry. Chomps has loved the root beer version since she was a kid. The content creator points out that “Walmart has an 18-count pack of them for under $4! You can’t beat the combo of a refreshing treat that is [affordable].” 

With a perforated line down the center that makes them easy to split in two, Twin Pops are designed to be shareable. That means you’re really getting around 36 popsicles for less than $4, and you can always opt for a fruity flavor if root beer isn’t your thing.

Great Value Neapolitan Ice Cream Sandwiches

There’s no reason to settle for one ice cream flavor when you can have three at once. Chomps explains, “For me, nothing beats an original, classic ice cream sandwich. The chocolate cookie part is a must for me to really feel like I’m eating a true ice cream sandwich, and I will always choose the Neapolitan option if there is one.”

The Great Value Neapolitan Ice Cream Sandwiches are exactly the kind of classic treat the creator is looking for. Soft chocolate cookies contain three ribbons of vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry ice cream. Better yet, each box of 12 sandwiches costs only about $3.

Great Value Orange Sherbet Tubes

If you’re searching for a taste of nostalgia, Chomps says, “I love Great Value’s Orange Sherbet Tubes. They’re an [affordable], yummy treat that’s fun to eat no matter what age you’re at.” Just like the sherbet pops you might remember from childhood, these tubes slowly push up as you eat them.
