Bad Bunny says it’s his all-time favorite snack.
Why Make This
- This Puerto Rican snack combines salty ham, cheddar, and sweet guava jelly for bold flavor.
- It’s incredibly simple to assemble, making it perfect for quick snacks or entertaining.
- Guava jelly adds a sweet twist, but apricot or other fruit jams work just as well.
I watched the Super Bowl with my family, and found myself thinking more about the halftime show than the football. I’m a cookbook author and former New Yorker, so I loved that the halftime show’s set included the bodega La Marqueta. That sent me down a rabbit hole to figure out what Bad Bunny likes to eat when he’s not performing live on a football field.
I quickly discovered an interview on TikTok with Iván Emilio where Bad Bunny says, in Spanish, that he can eat Ritz crackers with Queso de Papa (a mild cheddar) all night long. Sometimes, he even adds jamoncito, a small piece of ham, making it the Puerto Rican version of Ham & Cheddar Lunchables. Emilio, the host, muses out loud about Ritz, queso, and guayaba, which most likely refers to guava jelly.
It turns out both combinations are typical Puerto Rican entremeses típico, or small, everyday bites. The snack sounded divine to me, so of course, I had to test it at home. Luckily, I already had Ritz crackers, ham, and cheddar! Emilio’s suggestion of guava intrigued me, so I bought a jar of guava jelly from a local Asian supermarket.
Note that Bad Bunny specifically prefers Queso de Papa, a kind of cheddar. Legend says Pope John Paul II enjoyed this cheese during a visit to Puerto Rico, so it earned the moniker Queso de Papa, or “Pope’s Cheese.” I couldn’t find it where I live in Washington, though you may have better luck elsewhere.
How I Made This Snack
This Puerto Rican snack is so simple to put together that it almost feels like cheating. Remove the crackers from the package and place them on a plate. Slice the cheddar cheese to fit each cracker. I like mine thicker than a Kraft slice, but honestly, go as thick or thin as you want. Then add a thin slice of ham, which makes each bite extra satisfying and pleasantly salty. It’s so simple but deeply satisfying.
Finally, I made this snack stack with guava jelly, and that was my favorite—the sweet-and-salty combination felt perfectly balanced and delicious. If you can’t find guava jelly, I feel you can use apricot or another fruit jam or jelly as a substitute.
Bad Bunny was right: This is absolutely something I could eat all night long! It’s the kind of snack you don’t realize you’re eating over and over, kind of like when you’re listening to “Tití Me Preguntó” on repeat.
