Texas A&M finished 11-2 last season, reaching its first College Football Playoff and recording double-digit victories for the first time since 2012.
But the Aggies also lost their final two games after an 11-0 finish, falling at arch-rival Texas in the regular-season finale and at home to Miami in the first round of the playoff. That was good, but not good enough for Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko.
Asked Wednesday at SEC Media Days in Tampa how he kept his team from being satisfied with its finish last year, Elko had an easy answer.
“I show them our trophy case and it’s empty,” Elko said. “And I think they’re all very aware of that. … We’re obviously happy with the things that we accomplished. We’re happy with the direction of our program, but it’s also not lost on us that we haven’t won the hardware that we’re searching for.
“And so that gets us into a mindset of growth and getting back to work to go finish this thing a little bit better than we did last year and put ourselves in a better position maybe to compete for some trophies.”
Texas A&M hasn’t won a conference title since 1998, when it was a member of the Big 12. The Aggies have won just one national championship in the poll era, way back in 1938.
