Taylor Sheridan officially pulls the plug on Yellowstone's Beth Dutton formula

Yellowstone Officially Replaces Beth in Dutton Ranch Season 1's Finale
Taylor Sheridan Officially Pulls the Plug on Yellowstone's Beth Dutton Formula

Yellowstone officially cuts the cord on one of the most defining elements of Kelly Reilly's Beth Dutton character in her Dutton Ranch spinoff.

The following contains spoilers for Dutton Ranch Season 1, Episode 9, “El Padrino,” which premiered on Paramount+ on Friday, July 3, 2026.

Taylor Sheridan’s neo-Western universe parts with a defining element of Kelly Reilly’s Yellowstone character in Dutton Ranch, as Beth Dutton quits smoking. Beth and Rip Wheeler’s (Cole Hauser) Yellowstone spinoff debuted on Paramount+ on May 15, with Dutton Ranch’s premiere amassing 12.9 million viewers in its first week and becoming the streamer’s biggest original series premiere of all time.

Beth and Rip move to Texas in Dutton Ranch Season 1, after a fire destroys their ranch in Dillon, Montana, and the couple finds a new home in Rio Paloma. The couple meets characters like Everett McKinney (Ed Harris) and Beulah Jackson (Annette Bening) down south, ultimately working for Jackson’s 10-Petal Ranch, leading to their problems in Dutton Ranch’s finale.

Yellowstone quietly confirms that Beth has quit smoking in the finale of Dutton Ranch Season 1, as she turns down a cigarette from Everett despite the stress of her son, Carter’s (Finn Little) disappearance. Carter runs away from home in the penultimate episode, making him vulnerable to the cartel’s terror as Mariano Reyes (Raoul Max Trujillo) feuds with his parents.

After Beth and Rip discover that Beulah is using her 10-Petal Ranch to smuggle drugs across the border in cattle shipments for the cartel, interfering with their operation, Mariano sends an attack on the Dutton Ranch. However, Rip, Azul (J.R. Villarreal), Zachariah (Marc Menchaca), and Everett fend off the assault, causing the cartel to retaliate.

As Rip, Azul, and Zachariah load dead bodies into the back of a truck, preparing to dump them in Yellowstone’s new body dumping ground in Dutton Ranch, Beth and Everett sit and talk. Beth asks Everett, “You ever get that feeling… right here that the world is gonna open up and swallow everything that you love?”

Everett tells Beth that he has, and Dutton says she’s had the feeling so many times she has lost count, and that she was right every time. Therefore, Beth’s intuition is kicking in that her son is in grave danger, and despite this, she turns down a smoke from Everett a moment before, marking a dramatic shift in Reilly’s character.

Resisting a former vice during her time of need signals that Beth is committed to quitting smoking. However, she doesn’t announce this, just quietly turns down the very thing that she turned to throughout five seasons of Yellowstone while navigating the turmoil of her father, John Dutton’s (Kevin Costner) fight for the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch.

Dutton Ranch Evolves Beth Dutton’s Yellowstone Persona

Dutton Ranch has divorced Beth from one of her most defining trademarks, separating her from a formative element of her presence in the original series. Beth drinks and smokes heavily while managing the burden of the family’s failing ranch in Yellowstone, and having a drink or smoking a cigarette immediately becomes a natural part of Reilly's essence in the flagship.

Beth’s habits matched her more chaotic presence in Yellowstone. They also reflected the stress she was managing while navigating massive business deals and generational family trauma, while exposed to the war on the historic Yellowstone Dutton Ranch. Dutton Ranch has developed a more mature, balanced persona for Beth, and her quitting one of her regular habits underlines the changes.

The adjustment to Beth’s stress management is a tangible marker of the character development she’s undergone in Dutton Ranch, also shifting her approach to parenting Carter. When her son runs away in Dutton Ranch Season 1, Episode 8, Beth admits her worst mistakes in Yellowstone, telling him, “I’m sorry I haven’t been there for you. But I’m gonna try harder.”

After John Dutton died in Yellowstone, Beth is representing the family’s legacy, which also explains the changes in her persona. That said, Beth lights up a smoke in Dutton Ranch Episode 4, to ignite a fire that burns the trailer of the vet who forged their paperwork. Still, the finale suggests her actions were just a means to an end.

Reilly told TV Line that Beth was still smoking, saying, "I thought about maybe she might be putting the nicotine patches on and chewing the gum, but it was too much. Maybe in her future, I don't know. It just felt like that would be too much of a change." Perhaps she smokes on occasion, but the finale suggests otherwise.
