Tana and Gordon Ramsay's Mixed Metal Kitchen is a Guidebook on Turning Vertical Storage Into Decor

Stainless steel and copper are a winning combination in the couple's English home, and their technique of hanging pots is perfect

There are two trends we've been loving this season: stainless steel kitchens and hanging copper pots. Though each metallic look is striking on its own, Tana and Gordon Ramsay's kitchen demonstrates the magic of combining these two looks for a stylish mixed-metal finish.

An Instagram picture shared by Tana displays the couple's mixed-metal kitchen. It features a stainless steel fridge and extractor fan with silver hardware on the cabinets. Above Tana's head, antique-style copper pots hang from the fan. It's a unique marriage of modern industrial detail with storied country kitchen style for a blend that's instantly striking. It's also incredibly practical.

By hanging their pots from the ceiling, Gordon and Tana cut down on clutter while creating a new avenue for storage as decor. Their technique is clever, stylish, and increasingly accessible in modern kitchens.

To get to the bottom of tapping into their look, Homes & Gardens spoke with experts about how the different elements of the Ramsays' kitchen work together. We also curated an edit of our favorite copper and stainless steel pieces to make it easy for you to recreate their style at home.

As Gordon and Tana's kitchen demonstrates, the first key to creating a layered kitchen is looking up. Vertical storage options like tall shelves and hooks turn crockery into decor, while sparing lower cabinets from being overstuffed.

'Floating shelves and hooks can be both functional and visually appealing,' explains Laura Watson, interior design expert at IKEA’s Online Interior Design Service. She continues. 'Vertical storage solutions utilise otherwise wasted wall space while displaying items that reflect your personality. This also helps to keep the floor area clear, avoiding the room feeling cluttered.'

If you want to embark on a project similar to Gordon and Tana's hanging copper pots, the number one kitchen storage mistake to avoid is not planning carefully. Installing hooks and shelves is a time consuming process, and if you want them to part of the decor, it's important to ideate around how you can use them to elevate your home, rather than drag it down.

Laura advises: 'Jumping into space-saving projects without a clear plan can lead to inefficient use of space and resources. Taking the time to measure, plan and visualise the layout can result in a more effective and aesthetically-pleasing outcome.'

The other striking element of Gordon and Tana's space is the use of stainless steel in their kitchen. Though our Instagram feeds are inundated with images that select this finish for every surface, the couple demonstrates that you can go much more subtle.

Jen Nash, Head of Design at Magnet recommends: 'If you're uncertain about committing to an entirely stainless steel kitchen, integrating this material through smaller components of your culinary space, such as an island, butcher's block, or on countertops, serves as a graceful entry point for diversifying your kitchen's visual appeal and functionality.'

'A stainless steel kitchen island or countertop contrasts beautifully with surrounding cabinetry which is perhaps more traditional,' continues Jen. 'Bringing a balance between cold and warmer physicality to the space, the result can be a unique blend of industrial and organic elements that is a design statement in itself.'

If you want to integrate just one stainless steel element into your kitchen, Jen advises beginning with the work surfaces. She states: 'If you can’t decide between stainless steel cabinets or countertops, I would point out that opting for the latter has the added benefit of providing a very hygienic and easy-to-clean surface for food preparation.'

Just like our personalities, no space is just one thing; in fact, it's in the fusion of different styles and design philosophies that homes truly come to life.
