With hundreds of dog breeds in the world, it's nearly impossible to know the distinct features of all of them—and rare breeds are even harder. One incredibly rare dog is stealing hearts for his wild, permed-looking locks and charismatic personality. He's such a rare sight that Mom says he has to be a whole new breed: a Coyote-Doodle.
Now that you've met Belgian Laekenois, Hoti, it's clear Mom was joking about the Coyote-Doodle breed, but their look is truly a one-of-a-kind masterpiece. He could easily fit into a pack of coyotes on the prowl, but I think his outgoing personality would give him away!
Saz is Hoti's dog mom, and the two share a tight bond. She's something of a superstar, having appeared in dozens of TV, film, and commercial projects where she shows off how incredibly smart these pups are.

This rare Belgian Laekenois and his adorable, toothy grin have fans around the world comparing him to a werewolf, a Muppet, "taxidermy come to life," and "the child of a Scottie, a Malinois, and a coyote." All of these sound about right!

Why Belgian Laekenois Are So Rare
With an estimated 1,000 to 1,500 Belgian Laekenois globally, these pups are one of the rarest breeds in the world. As one of four Belgian Shepherd types, nearly extinct during World War I, the population has improved since getting the official American Kennel Club stamp of approval. However, they're still scarce compared to the other three Belgian Shepherds—the Belgian Malinois, Tervuren, and Groenendael.
All the fan comparisons aren't technically correct, but this good boy stands out for a few obvious reasons, and it begins with that "dryer lint" fur. It's rough, tousled, and wiry despite looking like a curly perm.
Considered a version of a "Wire-haired Malinois," dogs like Hoti were originally bred to herd and guard flocks and their property. They've been called the "jack of all trades" for having such a wide range of skills and talents.
They're very active, capable of playing fetch for hours, and have extremely intense personalities, so they're not right for everyone. Constant socialization and training are necessary throughout their whole lives, so adopting one of these cuties is a big commitment.
But for the right families, dogs like Hoti are fiercely loyal. If you're lucky enough to adopt a silly, goofy guy like him, there could never be a dull day because he's a riot!
