Being the brother of one of the greatest shooters in the NBA can be tough at times, with people starting to look at you through the same lens. That’s why Seth Curry once explained how being Stephen Curry’s brother affected his career.
Seth appeared on The Draymond Green Show on April 5, 2022, two months before Curry won his fourth NBA title. On the podcast, Green asked him if he had to overshadow Curry’s aura while building his career.
“Oh, absolutely. I said a lot early on: if my name was Joe Smith, I would’ve been in the league a long time ago,” Seth said. “Those connections can get you in the door, but there comes a time when you’ve got to produce every day and bring value, or they’re going to get you out of there.”
Since he entered the league, he has featured in 560 games over 14 seasons with 10 different teams. He has averaged 9.9 points, two rebounds, 1.9 assists, 0.6 steals, and 0.1 blocks per game.
Ironically, Seth’s 43.3% career 3P% edges Stephen’s 42.2%, a rare statistical win in a career shadowed by his brother’s dominance.
Seth referred to his start in the NBA. After going undrafted in the 2013 NBA Draft, Seth was waived by the Golden State Warriors, then chose to play in the D-League.
After a series of teams picking him up then waiving him, stints in developmental leagues, Seth found stability with the Sacramento Kings.
“Like I said, I could pick his brain, and I can, more importantly, just watch what he does and add it to myself, but I gotta mow that to who I am, and I gotta I gotta bring value to the team or to whatever I’m doing myself. There are pros and cons to being the younger brother of Steph and the son of Dell,” he added on YouTube.
Years later, Seth is focused less on the comparisons and more on finding the right opportunity to extend his NBA career.
Seth Curry’s future plans involve playing with Stephen Curry and trying to stay healthy
Not only was Seth carrying a load of expectations from Curry’s fans, but he also suffered from multiple knee, back, and sciatic injuries, which kept him from fully gaining momentum during his career.
He could only play 10 games last year alongside Curry before he suffered a sciatic nerve injury in his back and an adductor muscle injury. Recently, he talked about his goal for the offseason on Dubs Talk, as per Will Simonds on NBC Sports.
“I’m just trying to get completely healthy still, in the offseason, and see what happens here in July and August with free agency,” Seth said on Dubs Talk.
He explained that his priority is returning to full fitness before evaluating his options in free agency.
“A lot of turnover throughout the league with a lot of transactions. At this point in my career, just trying to find a perfect situation for me, and see what happens going forward this summer.”
While Seth is more focused on being physically fit for his future, he did mention his desire to play with Curry once again. The Curry brothers could play just three games together last season, with Seth now an unrestricted free agent.
“I mean, absolutely,” Seth said. “I wasn’t able to do everything I wanted to do on the floor last year, but I always got a lot of love for the organization, the fans — first class. Like I said, it’s disappointing what I dealt with last season.”
While Seth talked about the disadvantages of being Curry’s brother, he admires Curry more than anyone and wants to play with him next season as well.
