With training camp approaching, Pittsburgh Steelers fans will get their first look at one of the team's most intriguing rookie classes in recent years. The Steelers have the potential to develop several fan favorites while also bringing familiar faces to the fan base. The team selected local Penn State product quarterback Drew Allar in the third round. They also drafted Eli Heidenreich, who played his high school football in Pennsylvania. Both are easy players for Steelers fans to rally behind, but they may not be the only newcomers who quickly become fan favorites.
Max Iheanachor and Gennings Dunker are two rookies who could rapidly win over the fan base. Iheanachor's football journey is one fans will appreciate because of his work ethic and upbringing. Dunker, meanwhile, has already shown he possesses a larger-than-life personality. He caught the attention of many fans during the NFL Scouting Combine.
Khan's Steelers draft classes can continue building momentum
The 2023 draft class marked Khan's first as the Steelers' general manager. Since then, the organization has worked to sign several members of that class to contract extensions. After years of seeing relatively few draft picks earn second contracts in Pittsburgh, retaining key homegrown players has been a significant shift for the franchise. The 2024 draft class could see its own wave of extensions as early as next offseason.
Now, the Steelers' next draft class has an opportunity to build on the impressive pipeline Khan has established. That process begins on the campus of Saint Vincent College during training camp. The front office has done a strong job addressing several key needs on the roster, though additional moves could still come once camp concludes.
