Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4 marks the end of an era. Premiering Thursday, July 23, on Paramount+, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4 continues the voyages of the USS Enterprise commanded by Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount). Strange New Worlds season 4 is also Paramount+'s centerpiece to celebrate Star Trek's 60th anniversary in 2026.
Star Trek is now in a state of transition with an uncertain future. Paramount+ has canceled every Star Trek series on its slate that began with Star Trek: Discovery in 2017. The last two Star Trek series still on the streamer, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, both completed filming their final seasons by early 2026. Currently, there is no new Star Trek TV in development for the first time in a decade.
Given the lukewarm reception Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 received from fans in 2025, hopes are high for season 4. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4 intends to set the Starship Enterprise's course right by focusing on more interplanetary exploration reminiscent of classic 1960s Star Trek.
However, season 4 will also be the end of an era for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, which won't come close to matching the episode output of many previous Star Trek series.
Season 4 Is Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Last 10 Episode Season
There is confusion among fans online thatStar Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4 is the final season. This is not the case. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4 is not the final season, but it is the last time the prequel will deliver a full 10-episode season. Strange New Worlds' cast and producers do feel that season 4 is their best season (so far).
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds went into production of season 4 expecting that it would be the final season. This was due to the upheaval at Paramount+, which was dismantling its comprehensive Star Trek slate as Paramount Global prepared for its sale to Skydance Media. With Paramount Skydance's new regime now in place, Paramount+ finished canceling its remaining Star Trek series.
However, Paramount+ gave Star Trek: Strange New Worlds a renewal for a fifth and final season (instead of the streamer's initial offer of a two-hour wrap-up movie), which was announced during the promotion for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 in summer 2025. Production on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 5 began in the fall and was completed just before Christmas 2025.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' 5 seasons will amount to a grand total of 46 episodes. This is a far cry from the 79 episodes of Star Trek: The Original Series' 79 episodes and Star Trek: The Next Generation's 178 episodes, and even Star Trek: Enterprise's 98 episodes over four seasons. However, all of those shows were produced in a different era of TV.
Strange New Worlds Season 5 Will Be Star Trek’s Shortest Season Ever
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' season 5 renewal was good news/bad news. Good that there would be a fifth season, but bad that Paramount+ only ordered 6 episodes. This makes Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 5 the shortest season of Star Trek ever, not counting ancillary content like Star Trek: Short Treks.
There is no official word that Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers' plan for Star Trek: Year One, a spinoff consisting of new stories about Captain James T. Kirk's (Paul Wesley) first year in command of the USS Enterprise, will happen at Paramount+.
However, executive producers and co-showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers said that 6 episodes were enough to complete their 'five-year mission' to sync the end of Strange New Worlds to the start of Star Trek: The Original series.
Still, 46 episodes of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds are a better output than some of its peers at Star Trek on Paramount+. Star Trek: Picard only had 3 seasons and 30 episodes, by design. Sadly, Paramount+ cancelingStar Trek: Starfleet Academy with season 2 cuts the plan for the college-set series by half. Starfleet Academy's total of 20 will be the lowest episode count of any Star Trek TV series.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Star Trek: Starfleet Academy's final seasons are expected to premiere on Paramount+ in 2027. After that, Star Trek TV is expected to go on a hiatus before a relaunch sometime in the future, which may include a new executive producer to succeed Alex Kurtzman. In the meantime, Paramount Skydance's focus is to launch a new Star Trek theatrical movie franchise.
For now, Star Trek fans should relish its last chance to join the Starship Enterprise for a full 10-episode season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, and know that our heroic crew will be back for one more 6-episode final season that will end with Captain Pike passing command of the USS Enterprise to Captain James T. Kirk.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds premieres Thursday, July 23, on Paramount+.
