Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4 debuts tomorrow (Thursday, July 23). However, the early reviews are already piling up, and they look quite promising. In fact, the latest adventures of the USS Enterprise on Paramount+ have garnered a perfect Rotten Tomatoes score, at the time of this writing, and the critics are saying the following so far.
“Any combination of characters generally results in a good time," an excerpt from SlashFilm’s 8.5/10 stars review reads. "And the season exploits this to fullest by tossing different subsections of characters into wild sci-fi scenarios that range from apocalyptic to, well, stoner comedy."
The SlashFilm excerpt continues as follows:
"And I'll just say it: the stoner comedy episode had me, a lifelong 'Trek' viewer, howling with laughter even as I knew it would be controversial among other fans. I was not prepared to witness Ethan Peck's take on Spock under the influence, and neither are you."
Equally positive reviews poured in from recognized media outlets, including ScreenRant and RogerEbert.com, but Strange New Worlds season 4’s 100-percent Tomatometer rating on Rotten Tomatoes didn’t come without some negativity. Two excerpts from Collider’s 6/10 score read as follows:
“While each episode plays out like its own mini-movie over the course of an hour, and there are a handful of standout character moments among the first episodes of the season, the series continues to treat its characters like props rather than people."
The second excerpt from the Collider review is more positive and reads as follows:
"The middle four episodes jump from horror to buddy comedy to noir to puppets. These wild, contrasting swings deliver something for everyone and keep the audience on their toes as each week offers something new and delightful both visually and narratively.”
After reading the Collider review, I’m not sure this particular critic has seen every season of Strange New Worlds since the show has given all of its main characters, and even its guests, meaningful arcs, which contradicts the “props rather than people” comment made during the review.
Star Trek: SNW Rotten Tomatoes scores (Tomatometer for each season):
Season 1: 98 percent (“Certified Fresh”)
Season 2: 97 percent (“Certified Fresh”)
Season 3: 88 percent (“Certified Fresh”)
Season 4: 100 percent
When more reviews are recorded on Rotten Tomatoes, I predict Strange New Worlds season 4’s Tomatometer rating will likely land somewhere between 93 and 95 percent, as Trek returns to form but doesn’t shy away from those “big swing episodes” showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers are so fond of making where genres are concerned.
Personally, I can’t wait for fans to see the film noir episode actor Anson Mount (Captain Pike) teased while doing the Strange New Worlds season 4 press tour. However, I’m most excited about the horror installment since scary movies encompass one of my favorite genres. Although, being a Muppets fan, I’m extremely curious to know what other Star Trek fans think about the Pike puppet story.
