Despite not being a blue-chip recruit coming out of high school, DeShawn Spencer has become a freshman to watch at Auburn going into the 2026 season.

He was the offensive MVP of the A-Day spring scrimmage and was a breakout player during the spring. Spencer was a three-star recruit out of Saraland High School, according to 247Sports, but has looked like a blue-chip recruit since arriving on the Plains.

Auburn head coach Alex Golesh has mentioned the strength of the Saraland program as something that has helped prepare Spencer for this level. Alabama star wide receiver Ryan Coleman-Williams, one of Spencer’s former high school teammates, agrees.

“That’s what we breed at Saraland,” Coleman-Williams said at SEC Media Days. “We breed workhorses and we depend on each other to go work day in and day out.”

Spencer and Coleman-Williams were both impact players on the 2023 Saraland team that was the state runner-up. Coleman-Williams was one of the top players in the country coming out of high school and was an impact player at Alabama the past two seasons.

Spencer hopes to have a similar impact at Auburn as a freshman, and his former Saraland teammate believes in him.

“Just focus on the work and all, and all of the results will show for themselves,” Coleman-Williams said, “just like they did at the end of the season last year and just like they will in this upcoming season, I believe.”
