Marvel Studios seriously dropped the ball with one aspect of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The highly anticipated MCU sequel sees Tom Holland's return as Peter Parker/Spider-Man five years after the events of No Way Home. He'll be joined by several other fan-favorites, including Zendaya's MJ Watson, Jacob Batalon's Ned Leeds, Jon Bernthal's Frank Castle/Punisher, and more.
While Brand New Day's cast is already massive, one iconic character won't appear in the upcoming film. Despite having starred in more Spider-Man movies than Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, or Tom Holland, J.K. Simmons will not reprise his role as J. Jonah Jameson in the Webhead's next outing — and fans should be extremely disappointed.
J. Jonah Jameson Will Not Return in Spider-Man: Brand New Day
J.K. Simmons has officially confirmed that he will not return as the fiery Daily Bugle journalist J. Jonah Jameson in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The actor made his debut as the newspaperman all the way back in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man twenty-four years ago, going on to appear in both sequels, released in 2004 and 2007, respectively.
Much to everyone's surprise, Simmons reprised his iconic comic book role in the mid-credits scene of Spider-Man: Far From Home, becoming the first actor to play the same Marvel character across multiple different universes. This iteration of the character takes on more of an Alex Jones in InfoWars personality, rather than the bold but principled reporter of the Raimi era. He returned for a larger role in 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home, which also featured the return of several other Raimiverse characters, including Tobey Maguire's Peter Parker.
Over nearly twenty-five years, J.K. Simmons has starred in more Spider-Man movies than almost any other actor. Including a voice-only appearance in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Simmons has starred in six films as J. Jonah Jameson. He competes only with Tom Holland, who will make his seventh appearance as Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
All this makes it all the more disappointing that Simmons will not return in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. He hasn't been featured in any of the trailers or promotional material, but Marvel is known to keep a few surprises for each film's theatrical release. While Simmons may be lying about not being in the film (which wouldn't be uncommon for an MCU actor), it doesn't seem likely that his involvement would be a sorely kept secret, as he appeared in two of the three Holland-era Spider-Man films already.
Ironically, Brand New Day seems like the best place to explore more of J. Jonah Jameson's character in the MCU. The highly anticipated superhero sequel takes Spider-Man back to his roots as a street-level vigilante, restoring many of the iconic elements of the character that audiences loved from the comics. Jameson is yet another element of Spider-Man's comic book history that sorely needs more exploration in the MCU. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like Brand New Day had the capacity to include this relationship.
Even a small appearance from Simmons, similar to his cameos in Far From Home and No Way Home, would have kept fans satiated. The actor's boisterous performance as J. Jonah Jameson is enough to steal the show even with only a few minutes of screen time. Still, it looks like fans will have to hope that Spider-Man 5 reverses course and brings the Daily Bugle's biggest personality back to the big screen.
J.K. Simmons Is One of the Greatest Comic Book Castings of All Time
J.K. Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson is undoubtedly one of the greatest comic book castings of all time. He effortlessly blends into a character who is relatively difficult to pull off. The Daily Bugle publisher is loud, brash, and often obnoxious, a larger-than-life caricature of newspapermen of the 1960s, when Stan Lee and Steve Ditko started The Amazing Spider-Man. Yet Simmons blends into the role so seamlessly, it's uncanny.
Not only does J.K. Simmons perfectly capture JJJ's big personality, but he also adds dimension to the character. In the comics, Jameson is a hardheaded and stubborn man, but he ultimately has a heart of gold. It would have been easy to capture only the louder aspects of his personality, but Simmons instead makes Jameson as three-dimensional as possible. The result is that audiences can't help but love the publisher, even when he consistently makes Spider-Man's life harder.
When discussing the greatest comic book movie castings of all time, fans understandably gravitate to iconic superheroes and their archenemies. However, J.K. Simmons makes a strong case for the best supporting-casting in the superhero genre. Never before or since has a role seemed so tailor-made for a single actor, to the point that it is difficult to imagine anyone else in it.
It should say something that three separate film franchises (the Raimiverse, the MCU, and the Spider-Verse) have chosen to cast J.K. Simmons in the role of J. Jonah Jameson. Moreover, the only Spider-Man movie franchise that doesn't feature Simmons, The Amazing Spider-Man, also doesn't introduce a new version of his character. It seems that no one wants to even try replacing this iconic pairing between actor and character.
For every generation of Spider-Man fan, J.K. Simmons is J. Jonah Jameson. If that isn't the litmus test for the greatest superhero movie casting choice of all time, then what is?
Does J. Jonah Jameson Have a Future in the MCU?
As disappointing as it may be that J.K. Simmons will not return in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, that doesn't mean that J. Jonah Jameson doesn't have a future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. There are endless opportunities for the iconic newspaperman to show up in more MCU titles.
The most obvious place to feature J. Jonah Jameson's return would be in another Spider-Man movie. It is believed that Tom Holland has signed on for another trilogy, making Spider-Man 5 and 6 very likely. These potential sequels would be perfect opportunities to bring back J.K. Simmons and expand on the MCU version of his character.
Alternatively, he could show up in another New York City-based project. J. Jonah Jameson would be a welcome presence in a show like Daredevil: Born Again, which will continue with Season 3 in early 2027. Daredevil and Spider-Man's universes are often connected, and Jameson has popped up in more than a few Daredevil comic books over the years.
Jameson is technically owned by Sony, along with the rest of Spider-Man's supporting cast. This makes it difficult for him to appear in MCU projects, as Marvel has to secure a deal with Sony to do so. Nevertheless, as the two studios continue to figure out their complicated partnership, more and more becomes possible as Spider-Man becomes more and more integrated into the larger MCU.
Hopefully, fans haven't seen the last of J.K. Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson. Whether he appears in another Spider-Man movie or another project entirely, he is always a welcome presence in any superhero movie. He will be sorely missed in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, even if the film pleases Spider-Man fans in every other way.
