A new rumor from 4chan (via Reddit) suggests that Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s big twist is that Peter Parker will be revealed to be a mutant. According to the rumor, Sadie Sink’s Jean Grey will be the one to break the news to Peter. It’s important to note that this remains an unverified rumor, as neither Marvel Studios nor Sony Pictures has commented on the matter. It also has not been reported by any scooper, so fans should take it with an extra grain of salt.
If true, it wouldn’t be the first time the MCU has revealed an established hero to be a mutant. Previously, Marvel revealed that Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, was a mutant. That was followed by Namor’s introduction in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, who is a mutant in a traditional sense. It would also lend credence to director Destin Daniel Cretton’s recent comments.
In the Marvel comics, Peter Parker gained his powers due to a bite from a radioactive spider. While that origin was used in Sam Raimi’s films, The Amazing Spider-Man series introduced a different explanation. In it, it was revealed that Peter’s father genetically altered the spiders to only affect those in his bloodline, a plot point that was not well-received by fans.
