Sophie Cunningham’s finger-pointing gesture during a moment with Mercury guard DeWanna Bonner went viral overnight. Since then, the Indiana Fever star has been getting a unique request from her fans.
Wherever she goes, her fans plead with her to point out her finger like she did during that viral moment. And that includes kids and grown-ups alike.
Well, Cunningham had never even meant for it to become a meme. Still, the 29-year-old guard has embraced her virality, catering to her fans’ demands whenever she can. Speaking of it in an interview, Cunningham said,
“They’re the ones requesting that. They’re like, ‘Hey, can you point?’ I’m like, ‘Whatever you guys want.’ So, I walked in, and instead of like cheers and stuff, everyone pointed. I don’t know if they set that up or what, but it’s been really fun to come in there, and now they all start to do it.”
It seems like the “Sophie Cunningham point” has taken a life of its own. So much so that several companies are trying to make money out of it. But the WNBA has forbidden its partner brands from using Cunningham’s viral meme in their advertisements.
“For licensed apparel, we generally do not feature or look to monetize player conduct from a confrontation between our members,” a WNBA spokesperson said.
Well, Cunningham holds the right to sign an endorsement deal with any brand, or monetise on the gesture by licensing it through her own products. But she hasn’t said anything about whether she wants to commercialise the stance.

Appearing on her podcast, Sophie Cunningham spoke about her viral finger-pointing and how it went down.
DeWanna Bonner and Cunningham’s teammate Caitlin Clark got into a physical altercation during the Fever’s heated showdown with the Phoenix Mercury, following which only Clark received a personal foul. Cunningham found it unfair and walked up to the referee for an explanation.
“I was like, ‘Caitlin got [a technical], why didn’t she get one?’”, Cunningham told her co-host and former Summer House star, West Wilson. “I was just kind of pointing, and she was like, ‘Don’t you point at me.’ I was like, ‘Oh, shouldn’t have said that.’ I didn’t say a word.”
Cunningham then joked, saying that the finger point was “the stupidest thing I’ve ever done.”
“I think it was so dumb. But it was pissing her off, and I couldn’t help myself. I could not. She was losing her s***, and all I was doing was literally pointing,” she added.
Cunningham recently showed up at UFC 329, which featured the most-awaited fight between Conor McGregor and Max Holloway. After Holloway took the win over the “Notorious”, Cunningham “pointed” at the center of the Octagon alongside Holloway, which again had the crowd go gaga.
