Nordhouse Dunes Beach, tucked inside the Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness between Ludington and Manistee, feels like the version of Lake Michigan most people never see. You won't drive straight to the shoreline. Instead, you'll hike about a mile through forest and rolling sand dunes before the trees suddenly open to a wide stretch of beach.
The first glimpse of the lake stops you in your tracks. Soft golden sand stretches for miles. Clear blue water reaches all the way to the horizon. Most visitors reach Nordhouse Dunes Beach from the Nurnberg Road Trailhead, about a 1-mile hike from the parking lot. You can also access the wilderness from the Lake Michigan Recreation Area, which offers additional parking, a campground, and another route to the shoreline.
A recreation pass is required for parking. Bring plenty of drinking water because there isn't any at the beach. There are no lifeguards, trash cans, or concession stands, so plan ahead and pack out everything you bring with you. Comfortable shoes are a good idea because hiking through deep sand is no joke.
Spend Some Time Exploring Free Soil
One of the best parts about visiting this underrated beach in Michigan is exploring nearby Free Soil. The small town is about 20 minutes from Ludington, roughly two hours from Grand Rapids, and around three and a half hours from Detroit, making it an easy weekend destination.

The extra walk rewards you with towering dunes, miles of shoreline, crystal-clear water, and a beach that still feels wonderfully natural.
