Sports media personality Skip Bayless isn’t pleased with how the 2026 FIFA World Cup Final played out and destroyed soccer on social media.
Spain’s 1-0 win against Argentina has many sports fans disappointed by the World Cup outcome. However, Skip Bayless isn’t holding back on his opinion just one day after the conclusion of the tournament.

Bayless delivered one of his typical social media tirades Monday after Lionel Messi and Co. lost to Spain. In fact, Bayless claims that soccer suffered a massive blow on the global stage during the World Cup final.
“I was excited for yesterday’s World Cup final — which left me flat,” Bayless wrote on X. “One goal in 120 minutes. Spain won with suffocating defense that rendered the GOAT[Messi] just another player.
“More stars in the stands than on the pitch. Soccer turned back into what it mostly always has been; boring.”

Bayless certainly isn’t the only notable figure that shares this sentiment after Messi’s disappointing showing. Argentina failed to take a shot on target during regulation, which made World Cup history in all the wrong ways.

Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark quickly described Sunday’s final as “boring” as well during her WNBA media appearance.
Meanwhile, numerous celebrities in attendance at New York New Jersey Stadium were only treated to one goal in the Argentina-Spain encounter. Ferran Torres’ extra time goal helped secure the victory for Spain after over 105 minutes of scoreless soccer.

Bayless is never shy when it comes to bold sports takes, but he might actually have a point when it comes to Spain’s win. The European nation doesn’t play a particularly stunning style of soccer, but their defensive prowess and ability to possess the ball makes them extremely difficult to beat.
Bayless and others aren’t giving the Spanish enough credit for shutting down some of the best players and teams in the world. Spain’s route to winning the 2026 World Cup includes beating Portugal, France and Argentina.
That means the Spanish managed to eliminate Cristiano Ronaldo, Kylian Mbappe, Messi and countless other elite stars in order to secure their second World Cup title.
