Conservative political commentator and media personality Megyn Kelly is once again making headlines after she targeted Michelle Obama in a 12-minute rant on an episode of The Megyn Kelly Show on Monday. The Right-wing commentator lashed out at Michelle Obama for the comments she made on her IMO podcast.
While talking to actress Keke Palmer, Obama told her about the media coverage of one of her first speeches, where they first spoke about her style and fashion before what she said in her speech. She told Palmer, “And I realized, ‘Oh, this is how they do women in politics. This is how we treat women in public life. ‘ We diminish them to just what they look like, and not what I’m saying.”
The former first lady praised her own talents for making “impassioned speeches” and noted, “That didn’t just start. I was always a powerful orator.” The episode was recorded live at the Essence Festival in New Orleans on July 3 and released last week. These comments prompted a lengthy response from Kelly. According to The Daily Beast, she questioned both Obama’s self-assessment and her podcast’s popularity.
Kelly claimed that Michelle has “been everywhere… trying to build her brand and trying to build her very sad little podcast.” Kelly also reacted strongly to Michelle’s remarks about her speaking abilities, saying, “Oh my God, she is dripping in narcissism. Dripping in it. Would you at least feign some humility? I’m embarrassed for you.”
She continued by criticizing Michelle’s public speaking style, stating, “You’re actually not that great. You’re fine, but you seem very scripted and artificial to me, if I’m honest. You don’t speak from the heart.” Kelly also referenced Michelle’s speech at the 2024 Democratic National Convention, adding, “You didn’t move me at all… You felt a little recycled and tired, if I’m being honest.”
The discussion then shifted to Michelle’s other comments about her fashion coverage. For starters, she rejected the suggestion that media attention diminishes female politicians to clothing and argued that wardrobe choices are a part of political messaging. “The reason they wrote about your fashion is because yes, you’re a woman. It wasn’t to diminish you,” Kelly said. “They do it to every female politician. And it’s not to diminish them. It’s because it’s interesting. It’s part of your look. It’s part of your messaging.”
Kelly further added that women’s fashion attracts more attention than the male counterparts as women take more risks and male politicians usually dress the same. She said, “The women do tend to take more risks. And then it gets more interesting. It’s fun to talk about.” She then referenced former President Barack Obama’s widely discussed tan suit from 2014 as an example of how men’s clothing can also become a news story, saying, “We wrote about it. Oh, that was our racism. I forgot.”
The broadcaster also pointed to Michelle Obama’s multiple Vogue covers and the release of her fashion book, The Look, claiming, “She wants to be known for her fashion, but it has to be on her terms. She finds grievance in everything.”
Kelly’s criticism eventually extended beyond Obama’s podcast comments to include her family. During the segment, she speculated about Barack Obama’s gray hair and the family’s public appearances. She said, “This is what poor Barack has been dealing with for 20, 30 years now. I mean, no wonder the guy is so gray so prematurely. No wonder the girls fled the coop and you never see pictures really with the four of them. I’m sure they’re so happy to be rid of this non-stop Negative Nelly all the time.”
