Donald Trump found himself at the center of another late-night roast after his appearance at the FIFA World Cup final.
Seth Meyers devoted a large portion of Monday, July 20, show to mocking the president and his reputation for bringing bad luck to every team he supports.
Trump was at MetLife Stadium, in East Rutherford, New Jersey, when Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 in extra time.
“Trump’s sports curse strikes again,” Meyers joked. “He goes to the NBA Finals, the Knicks lose. He intervenes to get a red card overturned, USA loses. He says you can’t bet against Messi, Argentina loses. He owned a USFL team, and the whole f****** league folded. He’s a sports reaper.”
Apart from the victory, what grabbed everyone’s attention was how the POTUS acted during the trophy presentation by not moving away at all. Viral videos showed Gianni Infantino and Spain captain Rodri attempting to usher Trump away before the team celebrated.
“The head of the most corrupt organization on Earth was, like, ‘This is a bad look,'” Meyers took a dig at the situation.
He added that Trump refused to leave because “he wanted the attention or he forgot where he was because he’s 80 and his brain is smoother than a soccer ball.”
The host imagined Rodri telling the president, “OK grandpa, time for bed.” He also addressed the loud boos that greeted Trump when he walked onto the field for the medal ceremony.
Meyers joked, “At this point, I’m guessing Trump’s staff tries to make him feel better by telling him he’s just being followed around by ghosts.”
The situation is unusual because the president publicly criticized Spain for not supporting the U.S. in its conflict with Iran (via Reuters).
Another point of controversy is that FIFA uploaded photos of the celebration in which Trump appeared to be cropped out. Spain’s official Instagram posts also focused exclusively on the players.
However, it was later revealed that the original photos did not fully feature Trump (via the BBC).
The trophy presentation was similar to Chelsea’s Club World Cup celebration (via Yahoo! Sports). After presenting the trophy with Infantino, Trump remained onstage during Chelsea’s Club World Cup celebration.
Team captain Reece James later stated that players expected Trump to hand over the trophy and leave. Midfielder Cole Palmer said he felt “a bit confused” when the president stayed in front of the team.
