Donald Trump has expressed his desire for the United States to host another FIFA World Cup as soon as possible.
The U.S. president made the comments in a recent interview ahead of the World Cup final, where he also reflected on some of his favorite moments from the tournament.
However, despite Trump’s remarks, the United States cannot host or submit a bid for the next two editions, as FIFA has already awarded hosting rights for those tournaments.
Even as the curtain falls on the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Donald Trump is already setting his sights on bringing the tournament back to the United States.
The businessman shared his ambition during a brief interview with Fox Sports’ Jenny Taft ahead of the World Cup final, insisting that he had already informed FIFA president Gianni Infantino that America is ready to host the competition again without delay.
“I had a great idea for Gianni: You have to do two countries. Announce us again next time, and then announce another country after that. It’ll take out some of the anger and the shock,” Trump told the journalist. “Based on the numbers, we will be requesting it again immediately.”
Trump Shares His Favorite World Cup Moments
Although Trump attended only the World Cup final, he revealed several of his favorite moments from the tournament.
One highlight was Scotland’s celebrations after defeating Haiti to secure the country’s first World Cup victory in 36 years.
“Well, I watched it. It started with Scotland, and all of a sudden they’re doing things that nobody’s ever seen with the bagpipes, and it was beautiful. Then it just went to every country, and they’re realizing what a great country this is,” Trump said.
He also praised the tournament’s economic impact, claiming visitors had spent trillions of dollars in the United States.
“They’re coming from all over the world, and they’re spending their money here. We’ve never had a period of what I call the golden age of America. It’s amazing,” he added.
Donald Trump Calls Sports ‘A Microcosm Of Life’
Rounding out the conversation, Trump was asked why he believes sports are so important in bringing people together around the world.
“It’s been something from, I guess, probably pretty much the beginning of time,” the U.S. president remarked.
He then described sports as a “microcosm of life” before drawing an analogy to explain his point.
“You win, you lose,” he said. “But with sports, you see it over a two-hour period. And in life, you go a whole life before you realize whether or not you’re a winner or a loser. It’s a long time. And now it’s just something very special.”
Donald Trump Got Flak Over Wanting To Host The World Cup Again
In a separate interview, Trump described the tournament as “so successful” and the “largest World Cup in history by far.”
He also reiterated his belief that the United States should host a future World Cup on its own rather than alongside Mexico and Canada, which co-hosted this year’s tournament.
The remarks sparked backlash online, with many critics calling the suggestion “disrespectful.”
“He’s such an unprofessional and unpresidential jerk,” one user wrote, while another said, “He’s so delusional.”
“I say we leave Mexico and Canada in, and the United States out,” another commenter added.
Can The US Host The World Cup Again?
Hosting a FIFA World Cup requires meeting strict infrastructure, legal, financial, and operational standards—requirements the United States has already demonstrated it can satisfy by co-hosting the 2026 tournament. Even so, any future bid would still need to go through FIFA’s formal bidding process and compete against other interested nations.
However, the United States cannot bid for the next two editions because FIFA has already awarded those tournaments. The 2030 World Cup will primarily be hosted by Morocco, Portugal, and Spain, while Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay will each stage one centenary match to mark the 100th anniversary of the inaugural tournament. Saudi Arabia has already secured hosting rights for the 2034 edition.
For now, the U.S. has not announced any formal intention to submit a future bid. However, White House 2026 World Cup task force executive director Andrew Giuliani hinted at the possibility last month.
“Let me make sure we get through this World Cup on 19 July before we make our pitch for 2038 or other ones,” he said.
