Comedian Seth Meyers bashed President Trump during his late-night monologues this week, mocking the commander-in-chief for staying onstage during the celebrations and comparing himself to soccer superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.
During his NBC show “Late Night with Seth Meyers” Tuesday, Meyers took aim at a Truth Social post from the president over the weekend praising Andrew Giuliani, the White House’s point person for the tournament, for “elevating the World Cup to a level that nobody thought was possible.”
“Alright, calm down,” Meyers said. “It was already the biggest sporting event in the world. It’s not like he sold 7 million pickleball tickets.”
Meyers also jabbed at Trump’s comments during a pre-game interview before Sunday’s World Cup Final, when the president said Ronaldo has “a much easier life” and that he’d like to trade places with the Portuguese soccer star for “about a month or so.”
“‘Or longer!’ yelled Melania,” Meyers said. “You ever watch Ronaldo, like, run full speed up and down a soccer pitch and you’re like, ‘That guy doesn’t work as hard as President Trump?’”
During his show Monday, Meyers also took aim at Trump’s World Cup appearance over the weekend – when Spain won its second World Cup title in an extra-time thriller against Argentina.

“Lately he’s [Trump] had an especially tense relationship with Spain. He’s mad at them because they won’t support his pointless war with Iran,” Meyers said, rolling footage of Trump saying he doesn’t “want anything to do with Spain” and to cut off all trade with the nation.
“Spain is a hopeless country full of bad people and we will no longer talk to them, do business with them or trade with them, and he for damn sure isn’t gonna be caught dead with them on stage celebrating –” Meyers said.
He then cut to a video of Trump on Sunday standing on stage with Spain’s team after their World Cup win.
“If you’re surprised he’s up there, you forgot the first rule of Trump: Everything goes out the window if gold is around!” Meyers said.
“Less than a month ago, he said no more visits from Spain and now Spain is in America, holding the world’s most coveted trophy while Trump stands next to them like Forrest Gump during the history montage.”
The late-night comedian mercilessly mocked the president for apparently staying with the team after his welcome, showing clips of FIFA President Gianni Infantino rushing over to try and usher him off stage.
“The head of the most corrupt organization on Earth was like, ‘This is a bad look,’” Meyers said, jabbing at the international soccer association.
“But Trump insisted on standing there either because he wanted the attention or he forgot where he was, because he’s 80 and his brain is smoother than a soccer ball.”
At one point, Meyers said, Spain’s captain, Rodrigo Hernández Cascante, or Rodri, also appeared to try to guide Trump offstage – with the comedian joking, “Okay grandpa, time for bed!”
“It’s like being at a house party in high school, getting ready to cheer a buddy on for a keg stand, and then your weirdest neighbor walks into the house,” the host added.
He also tore into Trump for seemingly being booed by the World Cup Final audience after he walked out with Infantino to present the trophy – playing a montage of the president being booed at other sporting events including the NBA Finals.
“At this point I’m guessing Trump’s staff tries to make him feel better by telling him he’s just being followed around by ghosts,” Meyers said. “‘Mr. President, remember, no one’s booing you – that’s just Mitch McConnell saying hello.’”
“I’m just kidding, Mitch McConnell is definitely alive,” he added, nodding to a photo of the Kentucky senator in his hospital bed wearing jeans and a button-down. “They always make you stay in the hospital an extra week after you put your jeans on.”
Meyers also lamented that Trump “had to show up and put his stink on another event,” calling him a “sports reaper” because fan-favorite teams have lost after he attends games – specifically noting that Trump attended the sole game the New York Knicks lost in the NBA Finals.
“They’re gonna have to sage MetLife Stadium to get the hex out, otherwise the Jets might have a bad season,” Meyers said sarcastically.
