The website takes each state's individual rank in each of these categories and gives it a score based on those metrics.

Best states to move to

The top five states came out to be New Hampshire, Utah, Idaho, Virginia and Maine, rankings that remain relatively unchanged from 2025.

New Jersey ranked mediocre in most categories with the lowest ranking for affordability, at 43.

Its highest rank was in health care and education where it received an eight.

For safety, economic rank and quality of life, New Jersey ranked at 26, 18 and 19, respectively.

While New Jersey ranks decently well in quality of life and exceptionally in health care and education, its lack of affordability diminishes the ranking.

Compared to other states, like the ones in the top five, New Jersey doesn't rank as high in most categories and only beats No. 2 through No. 5 in health care and education.

While health care and education is known to be one of New Jersey's strong suits, the lack of affordability can hinder some people's ability to move here.

New Jersey has become increasingly more expensive, especially for homeowners, with the median home value ranging from $563,000 to $580,000, according to Zillow.
