The Spanish royal family made a quick trip home from New Jersey, where they watched Spain defeat Argentina in the World Cup finals. This afternoon, they hosted the victorious squad at Zarzuela Palace, the official residence of the Spanish royals located outside Madrid.
“This star is the reward for a path as long as it has been demanding, traveled with effort, sacrifice, perseverance, and exemplary commitment in every match,” the Spanish royal family’s social media posted after the game (translated from Spanish). “You have faced each challenge with the conviction of a great team and have carried the name of Spain to the very top. Congratulations to the players, the coaching staff, and all the fans. Today we celebrate a title; tomorrow we will remember a legend.” The World Cup final was the first time the family of four attended a Spanish men’s national football team match together.
After the team arrived in Madrid this afternoon, they went directly to Zarzuela, where there were received by King Felipe VI and the royal family. After, they will travel to Moncloa Palace, where Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez will welcome them at a governmental reception. Then, the players will board an open-top bus to parade through Madrid, ending with a celebration at the Plaza de Cibeles.
