The trailer for HBO's Hard Knocks' training camp edition is out. As most Seattle Seahawks fans already knew, the team will be featured on the series, the first time the team has been so. What is expected is that the team is treated with respect, but not a lot of inside intel on schemes is delivered.
That's perfectly fine, of course. What 12s likely care about most is getting a look at the real people that Sam Darnold, Devon Witherspoon, AJ Barner, and others are. But judging from the recently released first trailer of the new iteration of the series, one person is set to star: head coach Mike Macdonald.
That's because of all the voices heard on the trailer, Macdonald's is most prominent. His is the one fans hear at the beginning, middle, and end. Darnold and Cooper Kupp are heard, too, of course, and Witherspoon is seen and heard, but no one stands out more than the coach.
HBO's Hard Knocks trailer captures the best of the Seattle Seahawks
That is how it should be ideally. We know that Macdonald isn't going to drop much drama. That is not how he operates, and, therefore, that is not how his team operates, either. Instead, we will get sub-Pete Carroll positivity, but, more importantly, the kind of reality that Carroll's tenure never appeared to have.
That sounds somewhat silly, but it is also important. Carroll's time in Seattle was mostly successful, of course, but changed after the loss to the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLIX. Some players appear to tune out of the head coach's attitude and messaging. That is extremely unlikely to happen with Mike Macdonald, and it helps that his version of the team defeated the Pats in Super Bowl LX.
What should the rest of Hard Knocks look like? Hopefully, a bunch of fun. Personalities are going to come to light, and Barner is mentioned above because he has the kind of effervescence that cameras will like. He also could make a name for himself in general NFL circles that he already deserves. He's going to be a long-term factor in the Seattle Seahawks offense.
Players like Devon Witherspoon and Leonard Williams should be natural draws, as well. Maybe Jarran Reed, too, who can be seen in the trailer. Sam Darnold will clearly be a focus, too, as he is the quarterback. Who else stands out will be one of the reasons to watch the series that drops on Tuesday, August 4.
