The Seattle Seahawks’ new ownership group has one massive opportunity to build trust with players and fans, and the 2026 FIFA World Cup just exacerbated its importance.
For the global soccer tournament, all eleven NFL stadiums chosen as host venues replaced their turf with natural grass to meet that sport’s governing body’s strict playing surface rules. The National Football League itself stays relatively quiet on this topic, but their players don’t. It’s a commonly-held belief among them that although it would cost more money and it’s not the way they’ve always done things, the league should spend the extra money required to upkeep the safest and most optimal playing surface possible. It’s come into the forefront of the league’s conversations after the tournament shined a spotlight on it.
As the World Cup ended, players around the league spoke out about it more than ever before. Chicago Bears star quarterback Caleb Williams, Washington Commanders tackle Laremy Tunsil and Green Bay Packers linebacker Zaire Franklin all shared X posts with the hashtag, #WorthTheCost.
Seahawks players have made their opinions known on this topic for years as well. While they earned stellar grades on the NFLPA’s Report Card in all but one category last year, the playing surface was the lone bad egg.
As Neeru Khosla and the Khosla Family take over the reins of the team, there’s no clearer upgrade to the Seahawks’ operations available for an owner to make. There’s no doubt it will be one of the first big opportunities discussed once they begin.
