The Seattle Seahawks are working hard to keep the band together after winning Super Bowl LX. Seattle has been in lengthy contract discussions with Devon Witherspoon throughout the offseason. Now that training camp draws closer, both sides could be closer to finally getting a deal done.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport gave an exciting update on those negotiations just before the start of training camp.
“This time of year every big deal, every market-setting deal, affects all the other players at the position,” Rapoport said on Wednesday via Good Morning Football. “… Let’s start with Devon Witherspoon, the Seahawks’ star corner. My understanding is the Seahawks and Witherspoon have been in intense negotiations through the last several months on a deal that will only almost certainly make him the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL.”

The Seahawks look determined to keep their star cornerback, even if it means resetting the market. That is a big deal considering the Seahawks project to have just $29.16 million in cap space next offseason. A big-money extension could significantly eat into that cap space.
And by all accounts, Witherspoon could get an absolutely huge raise on his next contract.
“Previously, or currently I should say, it’s $31 million per year of new money. $32 million per year would be the new benchmark for Devon Witherspoon,” Rapoport added. “Would be very surprised if a deal doesn’t end up around there for the Seahawks star. Really just a matter of the two sides agreeing on a number and getting this deal done.”
Seattle also has some extra motivation to get this deal done quickly. The Patriots are in similar negotiations with cornerback Christian Gonzalez. If the Seahawks do not extend Witherspoon before Gonzalez, then the price tag will only increase.
It will be fascinating to see if both sides can hammer out a deal in the coming weeks.
