Sauron Officially Returns in First Look at New Lord of the Rings 2026 Release

The big bad of Middle-earth returns in 2026.

Sauron has officially returned. Prime Video has released the first look at Charlie Vickers as Sauron in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of PowerSeason 3. The new image, released via Empire Magazine's latest issue, shows Sauron sitting on his throne in Barad-dûr, armored and crowned.

Sauron is preparing to make war on the Elves to take back the Three Rings. That the War of the Elves and Sauron occurs in The Rings of Power Season 3 makes for a significant divergence from the original The Lord of the Rings timeline.

Sauron Forges The One Ring in The Rings of Power Season 3

The War of the Elves and Sauron isn't the only major milestone in Middle-earth history to be depicted in The Rings of Power Season 3. The Lord of the Rings fans will also get to see Sauron craft the One Ring in the fires of Mount Doom. “This is the season where Sauron makes the One Ring in the volcano," The Rings of Power co-showrunner Patrick McKay told Empire.

“The first day I walked onto that set, I cried,” Vickers says. “What an amazing privilege and honour to be able to tell that story. We were doing the Ring across two weeks, because the sequence is so long.

McKay teases that the scene is “the single most ambitious, technically challenging sequence we’ve ever done on the show. Charlie’s performance is absolutely staggering. We never could have prepared for it.”

This is also the season Sauron stops striking from the shadows and masquerading as other beings, like wayward King Halbard or the Annatar, the Lord of the Gifts, and fully reveals himself for who he is. “We have a full-on villain this season, in a way that was quite different before,” says co-showrunner J.D. Payne. McKay adds that this “changes the tone of the show. This third season is darker, more dangerous. No-one is safe.”

"The first two seasons were all about building out this world,” McKay teases. “But throughout that time, we’re lighting all these fuses and setting all these stories in motion. The third season is when all those bombs are starting to explode.”

Prime Video's synopsis for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3 reveals that war comes to Middle-earth when the series returns. The Rings of Power Season 3 is set several years after Season 2, and takes place at the height of the War of the Elves and Sauron, as the Dark Lord seeks to craft the One Ring that will give him the edge he needs to win the war, bind all peoples to his will – and at last rule all Middle-earth.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3 premieres on Prime Video in November. The first two seasons of The Rings of Power are streaming now.
