Ted Lasso delivered the best fake-out when we all thought Season 3 was it. The sports comedy drama really was supposed to end back in 2023. But with a lackluster "final" season and an ending that felt a little too premature, it came as no surprise when Apple TV announced in March 2025 that a new season was coming. It took some time, but it's almost here.
The story picks up some time after the events in Season 3, following AFC Richmond's accomplishment of coming second in the Premier League. Ted (Jason Sudeikis) moved back to Kansas to be with his son, Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham) sold 49% of the team to the fans and invested in Keeley's (Juno Temple) struggling PR firm, and Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein) took over coaching the team. Most importantly, Keeley presented the idea to Rebecca of starting a women's team, and we know that this is what the new season will focus on.
What Happened in Ted Lasso Season 3?
Given the more than three-year gap between seasons, some may need a refresher about what happened in Ted Lasso Season 3. After leading AFC Richmond to a second-place finish, which seemed next to impossible to achieve at the beginning of the season, Ted decided to return home to Kansas.
Rebecca was finally over her desire for revenge against her ex-husband Rupert (Anthony Head), even having met a handsome man on a houseboat in Amsterdam. When she had another chance encounter with the mysterious fling, it seemed to be fate. Keeley had lost the key investor in her PR company, but Rebecca jumped in to help.
Roy was working through his issues, seeing Dr. Sharon (Sarah Niles) regularly and still pining for Keeley. Jamie Tartt (Phil Dunster) finally dealt with the emotional walls that framed much of his adult life by coming to terms with how it all connected back to his relationship with his father.
After a short stint with West Ham, Nate (Nick Mohammed) apologetically returned to the team, this time even with a girlfriend in tow. Coach Beard married his beloved Jane (Phoebe Walsh) and decided to stay in England, and Sam (Toheeb Jimoh) opened a Nigerian restaurant, fulfilling his dream.
Colin (Billy Harris) felt a weight lift off him after coming out to the team. Surprisingly, he received help and encouragement from Trent Crimm (James Lance), who revealed that he is also gay. Trent wrote a book about Ted's coaching methods called The Lasso Way, but Ted respectfully asked that he change the title to The Richmond Way.
Who Stars in Ted Lasso Season 4?
Jason Sudeikis is back to lead the charge as the title character. There has been a cast switch with Henry; Grant Feeley (Obi-Wan Kenobi) now plays the 12-year-old version, taking over the role from Gus Turner. Given that Ted is in Kansas at least for part of the season and focusing more on his role as dad as well as coach, Henry and possibly his ex-wife Michelle (Andrea Anders) may have more prominent roles this season.
Many of the other main cast members are returning as well, including Waddingham, Goldstein, Temple, and Hunt, as well as Jeremy Swift, who plays Leslie Higgins. Based on the teaser, Matteo van der Grijn will also return as the mysterious houseboat man who captured Rebecca's attention in Amsterdam. Annette Badland is also back as Mae Green, owner and barmaid of the local hotspot, The Crown & Anchor Pub, where AFC Richmond fans love to watch the games and down a few pints.
Dunster is not confirmed as yet. He's currently starring in another Bill Lawrence comedy, Rooster. Mohammed is listed on the show's Wikipedia page as only appearing in Seasons 1-3, but he could make a surprise cameo. Head sadly passed away in June. It's unclear if the show will write in the character's death or simply leave him out of the story entirely and close the chapter on Rupert.
There are several new actors joining the cast, many of whom will likely be playing female football players. This includes Tanya Reynolds (Sex Education), Jude Mack (Back In Action), Faye Marsay (Adolescence), Rex Hayes (The Pact), Aisling Sharkey (Jurassic World: Dominion), and Abbie Hern (My Lady Jane).
There are question marks around others, including Niles (Dr. Sharon), Jimoh (Sam), Kola Bokinni (Isaac), Harris (Colin), Lance (Crimm), and Cristo Fernández (Dani Rojas). The latter is a professional footballer who recently signed with El Paso Locomotive. Even if the season is focused on a new team, however, I would be surprised if one or more of these characters didn't at least make a brief cameo.
What Is Ted Lasso Season 4 About?
Ted Lasso Season 4 will see Ted return to coaching and eventually end up back in the U.K. "Throughout the course of the season," reads the official logline, "Ted and the team learn to leap before they look, taking chances they never thought they would." Sudeikis told Deadline that they will discover that "wherever they land, it's exactly where they're meant to be."
While the first three seasons focused on the underlying theme of mental health in men's sports, Season 4 might center around different but also topical and timely social commentary. This is teased in a trailer scene when a familiar fan approaches Ted on the street and welcomes him back to England. He follows up this seemingly pleasant greeting, however, with an insult about how it's too bad he's coaching a bunch of girls this time, then calls Ted a "wanker."
It's easy to see how this might play into the current hot topic about the unequal balance of attention between men's and women's sports. Ted Lasso will likely use its story to shed light on this relevant and undeserved social topic.
Given that female characters will be at the center, Rebecca and Keeley may become more involved, forming their own female version of the Diamond Dogs to help players through personal challenges. But we will also see how Ted adjusts his approach, if at all, to instill hope and confidence in these competitive young ladies.
Ted Lasso Season 4 will undoubtedly continue with the same heavy comfort show style, focusing on processing trauma, working through personal challenges, believing in oneself, and healing in the process. Ted changed the lives of the AFC Richmond men's team, so the big question is if he can do the same for the women.
Crimm wrote, "If the Lasso way is wrong, it's hard to imagine being right." So, one thing's for sure: whatever approach Ted takes, he'll be successful in doing it.
Interestingly, Deadline spoke to co-creator Bill Lawrence, who confirmed that Sudeikis has a three-season arc planned for this revived show. That means if the viewership stars align (and let's face it, of course they will), Ted Lasso isn't back just for a one-and-done season to appease fans; it's telling a whole new story and opening an entirely new chapter of The Richmond Way.
When Will Ted Lasso Season 4 Stream?
Ted Lasso Season 4 will be available to stream exclusively through Apple TV starting August 5, 2026. There will be 10 episodes in the season, released weekly on Wednesdays through October 7, 2026.
The first episode is called "Home" and was directed by Declan Lowney, who is best known for directing the 1988 Eurovision Song Contest. Sudeikis, Brendan Hunt (who plays Coach Beard), and Goldstein will remain in the writers' room with a talented team of others.
One new writing addition this season is Emmy-winning producer and screenwriter Jack Burditt. He has worked on shows like Modern Family, Frasier, 30 Rock, Last Man Standing (which he created), Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, and recently, Nobody Wants This.
