After experiencing the original trilogy in machete order, Sam is now diving into Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, released in 1999. Having just learned that Darth Vader is actually Anakin Skywalker, she's about to meet the young version of the character who will become the galaxy's most feared villain.
The Opening Conflict on Naboo
The film opens with the Trade Federation blockading the planet Naboo over a taxation dispute. When Jedi ambassadors Qui-Gon Jin and Obi-Wan Kenobi arrive to negotiate, they quickly discover that the Federation has no intention of talking. A thrilling lightsaber battle ensues as the Jedi escape down ventilation shafts, showcasing their incredible combat skills against battle droids.
Queen Amidala, the young ruler of Naboo, finds herself in grave danger as the Federation invades the planet. She must flee to Coruscant to seek help from the Senate, but her ship is damaged during an escape through a blockade. The group realizes they need to land on Tatooine to repair their vessel and refuel.
Tatooine and a Mysterious Boy
On the desert planet Tatooine, the group encounters Anakin Skywalker, a nine-year-old slave who lives with his mother. Anakin is immediately drawn to Padmé, the queen's handmaiden, asking if she's an angel. The boy is a gifted pilot and mechanic, having built his own pod racer from scraps.
Qui-Gon senses something special about Anakin. When he has the boy's blood tested, the results are shocking: his midi-chlorian count exceeds even Master Yoda's levels. Qui-Gon believes Anakin may be the chosen one prophesied to bring balance to the Force.
The Boonta Eve Podrace
To get the parts they need, Qui-Gon makes a high-stakes wager. He bets his ship on Anakin winning the Boonta Eve podrace against Sebulba, a notorious cheater. The race is spectacular, with incredible sound design and visual effects. Anakin drives recklessly, at one point falling behind and nearly being killed, but through determination and instinctive Force use, he manages to win the race and finish first.
With the victory, Anakin is freed from slavery. Qui-Gon tells him he's to be trained as a Jedi, but Anakin must leave his mother behind. The emotional goodbye between mother and son sets the stage for the tragedy to come.
Coruscant and the Jedi Council
Back on Coruscant, the political situation worsens. Queen Amidala grows impatient with the Senate's inaction and calls for a vote of no confidence in Chancellor Valorum. Her bold move leads to the rise of Senator Palpatine as the new Supreme Chancellor, though viewers familiar with the earlier films know his true identity as a Sith Lord.
The Jedi Council tests Anakin but remains cautious about training him. Yoda expresses concern about the boy's future, noting that fear dwells in him. When Qui-Gon requests to take Anakin as his Padawan learner, the council refuses, deciding that Obi-Wan is ready for the trials instead. The decision upsets Qui-Gon, but the council sends him back to Naboo with Obi-Wan to uncover the identity of the mysterious dark warrior who has been hunting them.
The Mystery of Darth Maul
That warrior is revealed to be Darth Maul, a fearsome Sith apprentice with a red and black face, double-bladed lightsaber, and supernatural abilities. He's sent by his master to pursue the queen and discover the identity of the Sith Lord behind the invasion. His presence looms as a terrifying threat to the Jedi and the queen as they prepare to return to Naboo for a final confrontation.
The stage is set for an epic battle that will determine the fate of Naboo and introduce the beginning of a Jedi's tragic fall from grace.
