Rosie O’Donnell is getting even more honest about her recent face-lift, which she first discussed in a viral Substack essay in May.
The comedian’s deep-plane procedure, a more advanced surgery than a typical face-lift, cost about $90,000, she shared in a recent interview with People.
“I didn’t make (my face-lift) public until everyone started saying, ‘You look so much better. What are you doing?’” she told the outlet. “I didn’t want to be one of those people who says, ‘Oh, nothing.’ So why do I look like this? $90,000. I was worried about the cost. I don’t like to waste money. I would never spend that on a car.”
A deep-plan face-lift targets the ligaments in the connective tissue and muscle in the face using smaller incisions, whereas a regular face-lift stretches the face, according to experts at the University of California, San Francisco. A deep-plane face-lift is actually considered safer since it has less impact on the facial skin itself.
O’Donnell, who currently lives in Ireland, said her weight loss thanks to Mounjaro played a major role in her decision to get the procedure. In particular, she had a lot of “excess skin” under her chin, “and it made me look sad,” she told People.
“People in Ireland said, ‘Rosie, are you all right, love?’ I’m like, ‘It’s my face. I actually feel happy here.’ I didn’t want my face to be frozen. I had to wrestle with myself because as a feminist I always felt this is the male gaze and not anything I believe in,” she continued, adding that her 13-year-old child, Clay, had concerns.
“Clay said, ‘Mommy, girls look up to you. What does your legacy stand for if you do this?’ I changed my mind for six months and then decided the real power of feminism (is) to decide what we want to do with our bodies and when,” O’Donnell explained.
Clay, who is nonbinary, still doesn’t know that their mom got a face, O’Donnell shared.
“I hope they don’t pick up People magazine . . . but you never know,” the former talk show host shared.
In the May Substack essay, O’Donnell said that she’d gotten the face lift in January.
“I found a doctor I trusted — who had worked on friends of mine who all still looked like themselves, just like they had recently been told good news. Right before I went under, I grabbed my doctors hand and said ‘I will never say, ‘God, I wish you did more.’ And I meant it,” she wrote.
“I wanted a limit. I wanted to still be me, just … less haunted. And it worked — I do look like me — a slightly more well-rested emotionally stable version of me. I’m quite pleased with the whole thing.”
“I didn’t disappear, I didn’t become someone else — I just stopped arguing with the mirror. And maybe that’s enough. Or at the very least… it’s what a lower deep plane face lift looks like when it minds its own business.”
She also shared in the essay that it cost “more money than I have ever paid for a car.”
“Such is my privileged place in this world,” she added.
O’Donnell’s new one-woman show, “Common Knowledge,” opens July 22 at the Daryl Roth Theater.
