Houston Rockets guard Reed Sheppard took a big leap in production in his second season in the NBA. Playing all 82 games last year, the former Kentucky Wildcat star proved to be a reliable option off the bench. After an early exit from the playoffs, Sheppard opened up about what he’s been doing this offseason to improve for the 2026-27 campaign.
While talking with Vanessa Richardson of ESPN, the 22-year-old shooting guard claimed that the main thing he’s been focusing on this offseason is getting stronger. Sheppard claimed he’s been lifting weights with teammate Kevin Durant, improving his strength, along with his all-around basketball skills.
“I think the biggest thing would be just trying to get stronger, be in the weight room,” Sheppard said. “Other than that, working on everything. You know, ball handling, shooting, defense. But really, the biggest thing was staying in the weight room and getting a little stronger… I’ve been lifting with Kevin [Durant] the most in [California].”

If Sheppard makes big improvements to his game, he could be in for an even bigger role for the Rockets next season. While he’s already serving as the sixth man in Houston, the former first-round pick can become a more efficient asset off the bench, at the very least. Reed Sheppard ended the 2025-26 season averaging 13.5 points, 2.9 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 1.5 steals per game while shooting 43.0% from the field and 39.4% from three-point range.
The Rockets’ front office has essentially decided to run it back with the same group as last year. However, the club did add Dorian Finney-Smith to improve the depth of the roster. Meanwhile, both Sheppard and Tari Eason could be in for more prominent roles.
