Rick and Mortyis cruising towards its first movie, as co-creator Dan Harmon explains.
The television show is now in its ninth season, and confirmed by Harmon on May 19, 2026, a Rick and Morty movie is moving forward. Rick and Morty is one of Adult Swim's most popular shows, and it has been renewed far ahead, through at least its 12th season. It's regarded as one of the best adult animated shows on TV, and it isn't slowing down anytime soon.
In an interview with ScreenRant's Ash Crossan for President Curtis, Rick and Morty co-creator Dan Harmon discussed the latest with the upcoming movie. He jokingly said, "Oh, that is on Ruby on Rails, baby. That'll be released next summer." He then added, "But yeah, we're picking away at that as a script right now, and the hope is to get that over to whoever we're working for when we're done writing that."
This confirms that the creative team is writing the script and working on the film, alongside the production of the main show. When animated TV shows get dedicated feature films, it could mean a shift in focus, where writers focus on the movie, and less on the already successful show. However, given the success of Rick and Morty, and as suggested by Harmon's comments, it appears like Rick and Morty is on a good schedule.
Harmon, adding to his confidence in the film's future, said about the writing, "So, that’s a lot easier because you don’t have to wrangle cartoons’ schedules. They’re drawings of people, and so they’re all in as far as writing the script. That can be picked away at the same time as doing the show. Yeah, that’s what’s going on with that."
This isn't always the case with animated shows looking to become full-length movies. The Simpsons Movie took nearly two decades to come to fruition, and South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone faced a long battle over the rating for their first film, South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut.
But moving forward, given Rick and Morty's continued success, with ScreenRant's Ben Gibbons calling Rick and Morty, "easily the best adult animated series currently on the air," fans have a lot to be excited about. Although the movie won't be released next summer, like Harmon joked, the movie is a current, real project, with writers' workloads seemingly balanced and "all in as far as writing the script."
Currently, season 9 of Rick and Morty has a 100% critics' score and a 79% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. The tenth and final episode, "Field of Dreams," airs this Sunday, July 26, 2026, and it will be followed immediately by President Curtis, the Rick and Morty spinoff show.President Curtis is very similar in tone to Rick and Morty, and it marks the show's first official, in-universe TV spin-off. So, between a solid ninth season, an expanding TV universe, and Harmon's most recent comments, Rick and Morty fans have a lot to be excited about moving forward.
