Stratolaunch announced that its reusable Talon-A hypersonic aircraft has now completed over 10 successful test flights, reaching a key milestone for its flight testing program.
This achievement shows the increasing use of the autonomous vehicle in both government and commercial hypersonic research, including work with the Department of Defense’s Test Resource Management Center (TRMC) Multi-Service Advanced Capability Hypersonics Test Bed (MACH-TB) program.
Talon-A is the company’s first fully autonomous, reusable, air-launched hypersonic aircraft. It aims to make hypersonic flight testing more frequent and affordable, an area that has usually been limited by high costs and rare test opportunities.
Autonomous aircraft flies above Mach 5
The Talon-A vehicle is launched from one of Stratolaunch’s carrier aircraft before accelerating to speeds above Mach 5, which is about 3,836 mph (6,174 km/h). Unlike regular crewed planes, every Talon-A flight is fully autonomous, with no pilot or human control during the mission.
After its flight, the vehicle lands on a regular runway, where it is checked, refurbished, and used again. Stratolaunch noted that the same Talon-A has already flown several missions, showing that quick turnaround and reuse are possible.
The company said each mission gathered data on aerodynamics, propulsion, thermal protection, and advanced flight controls. This information is meant to help customers develop and test new hypersonic technologies faster.
Reusable design aims to reduce testing costs
Stratolaunch believes that reusable aircraft can help solve one of the main challenges in hypersonic development by making flight testing easier to access.
According to the company, traditional hypersonic tests are expensive, rare, and often do not provide many chances to collect flight data. Talon-A’s reusable design aims to reduce the time between missions and lower the cost of each flight.
The aircraft can carry different payloads, so customers can test sensors, materials, and other experimental technologies during hypersonic flights.
To support more frequent flights, the firm now uses two carrier aircraft and two Talon-A vehicles. Its refurbished Boeing 747-400, called Spirit of Mojave, is now also in service as a launch platform for the Talon program.
Company plans to increase flight operations
After reaching this milestone, Stratolaunch said it plans to use its reusable Talon fleet more and increase launch operations to support future test missions.
The company is also working on new hypersonic vehicles and looking for more partnerships with defense agencies, aerospace companies, and research groups around the world.
