A United passenger was delighted when they got upgraded to first class, only to be left speechless when they finally saw the state of their new seat.
A post shared by u/1ThousandDollarBill shows what a passenger, flying from Denver to Maui, was greeted with when they boarded the United flight. The passenger was “upgraded last minute,” so they had hoped for a more luxury seating arrangement once they got to first class, unfortunately, that was not the case.
Instead, u/1ThousandDollarBill discovered the bare bones of a seat that was missing its entire back cushion. It was stripped down to the metal structure, much to his surprise.
Newsweek has contacted United via email for comment.
After taking to Reddit about this experience, u/1ThousandDollarBill explained that flight attendants “didn’t say anything” about the seat, although the pilot “came out and apologized” a few minutes later.
“It was weird how having one of the pilots come out and tell me they were on it basically erased all worry,” the Reddit post reads.
On the armrest of the chair, there was a hat belonging to a maintenance employee, which was “comforting” for u/1ThousandDollarBill as they clearly knew about the problem.
The picture was shared on the r/unitedairlines Reddit thread, and in just a matter of days it has amassed over 1,300 votes and 110 comments at the time of writing.
While it was undoubtedly a surprise to be confronted by this sight, u/1ThousandDollarBill explained in a comment that it turned out to be “a 10-minute inconvenience that turned into absolutely nothing.” Fortunately, everything was resolved before takeoff and looking back, the poster said it was “kinda funny being upgraded to a seat without a back cushion.”
It certainly made for a memorable flight.
In the days since the picture was posted online, many social media users took to the comments section to laud the amusing situation.
One comment reads: “You were upgraded to it? From what, luggage compartment?”
Another Reddit user wrote: “Sounds like the mechanic was in the middle of working on it, then got called somewhere else, or was getting a part.”
Another person replied: “The only way I could handle this situation is to laugh hysterically. I am glad you got everything sorted out!”
While one commenter quipped: “I’d still take it in that current condition just to have more leg room.”
