According to Robbie Faulk of State 1878, Mississippi State is set to hire Matt Wells, the former Utah State and Texas Tech head coach. Wells will head to Starkville to become a senior offensive consultant for the program. He also becomes just the latest former head coach to join Mississippi State. A nice hire for Jeffy Lebby ahead of the 2026 season.
“Jeff Lebby is adding former Utah State and Texas Tech head coach Matt Wells to his staff as a Senior Offensive Consultant, a source tells @State_1878,” Faulk said via X. “Another really good add to that offensive staff this offseason that includes Phillip Montgomery and Kevin Johns.”

Wells spent the last two seasons in the Big 12, coaching at Kansas State. Assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach were roles he had both years. But Wells was the co-offensive coordinator for the Wildcats in 2024 before getting the solo title in 2025. When a coaching change in Manhattan took place, Wells was back on the market.
He and Lebby actually worked together not too long ago. Wells was on Oklahoma‘s staff in 2022 and 2023 as an offensive assistant. Of course, Lebby was the OU offensive coordinator.
Now, the duo are hoping to find success at Mississippi State. You have to imagine Wells will spend some time with the quarterbacks, given his background. Mississippi State has one of the brighter young guys in the SEC with Kamario Taylor. Even Nick Saban is high on what Taylor brings to the table. Hopefully, Wells is able to add to Taylor’s development.

Wells got his start as a head coach at Utah State after spending two years as an assistant. From 2013-2018, Wells was in charge of the Aggies. Results were certainly positive, finishing with a record of 44-34. Two 10-win seasons were produced, as was bowl eligibility in five of six years. Three of those bowl appearances turned into wins.
Texas Tech liked what they saw from Wells, hiring him ahead of the 2019 season. Unfortunately, his time in Lubbock did not go as well. Only two full seasons were given to Wells, who was fired in the midst of a 5-3 start in 2021. His Texas Tech record finished at 13-17 overall, winning just seven of the 23 Big 12 games.
