Tim Corbin is turning to a familiar and proven figure for the first major hire in Vanderbilt baseball’s new personnel structure.
According to D1Baseball’s Kendall Rogers, USC assistant coach Travis Jewett is leaving the Trojans to become Vanderbilt’s new director of player strategy and personnel, essentially serving as the program’s general manager.
Although the long-term results of a personnel position may not become fully visible for several recruiting cycles, Jewett brings an extensive track record as a recruiter, player developer and college baseball coach. More importantly, he already understands Vanderbilt and the standards Corbin has established within the program.
A Familiar Face on West End
Jewett previously worked at Vanderbilt from 2013 through 2016, eventually rising to associate head coach under Corbin. He oversaw the Commodores’ offense and served as recruiting coordinator during one of the most successful stretches in program history.
Vanderbilt won its first national championship in 2014, returned to the College World Series championship series in 2015 and continued sending players into professional baseball throughout Jewett’s tenure.
According to his USC biography, 25 Vanderbilt players coached by Jewett were selected in the MLB Draft, including four first-round picks. Twelve of those drafted players were hitters.
The list of major leaguers he helped coach or develop during his career includes Dansby Swanson, Bryan Reynolds, Walker Buehler, Carson Fulmer, Kyle Wright, Tony Kemp and Mike Yastrzemski.
When Vanderbilt originally hired Jewett, Corbin praised his teaching ability, energy, recruiting background and willingness to handle every aspect of building a program. Corbin also emphasized Jewett’s experience succeeding at programs with varying levels of resources.
That existing relationship should allow Jewett to enter the new position with a clear understanding of what Corbin wants Vanderbilt’s roster and culture to look like.
Decades of Experience Across College Baseball
Jewett’s résumé extends well beyond his first Vanderbilt tenure.
He has held assistant coaching positions at Gonzaga, Washington, Washington State, Arizona State, Vanderbilt and USC. He also spent six seasons as Tulane’s head coach from 2017 through 2022, compiling a 160-138-1 record.
That overall record does not fully reflect what may have become the breakthrough season of his tenure.
Tulane opened the 2020 season 15-2, earned a national ranking and recorded its best start since 1972. The Green Wave appeared positioned to become one of Jewett’s strongest teams before the COVID-19 pandemic abruptly canceled the remainder of the college baseball season.
Jewett and Tulane never received the opportunity to see how far that team could go.
His Tulane teams ultimately produced three All-Americans, five Freshman All-Americans, 13 all-conference selections and 17 MLB Draft picks.
Jewett joined USC in 2022 as an assistant coach and worked with the Trojans’ hitters and outfielders. During his time with the program, USC recorded three consecutive 30-win seasons for the first time since the early 2000s and returned to the postseason in 2025 after a decade-long absence.
His experience combines many of the qualities Vanderbilt would want in a general manager-style position. Jewett has evaluated and recruited players, developed future professionals, managed an entire program and worked within several prominent college baseball environments.
Why the Hire Makes Sense
The exact responsibilities of Vanderbilt’s new director of player strategy and personnel aren’t well known (though we suspect most decisions to start and end with Tim Corbin), but modern college baseball programs must manage high school recruiting, the transfer portal, roster limits, professional draft decisions and player retention simultaneously.
Jewett has already demonstrated that he can identify and develop high-level talent. He also returns with direct knowledge of Vanderbilt and an established relationship with Corbin.
His previous head-coaching experience should also be useful. Jewett understands roster construction from more than a recruiting perspective because he has been responsible for managing an entire program and making decisions about how individual players fit into a larger plan.
This is not necessarily a hire whose impact will be measured immediately. The success of a personnel department is often revealed over several recruiting classes as players are identified, brought to campus and developed within the program.
Still, as the initial hire for the position, Jewett appears to be a strong choice.
Vanderbilt is not handing an important new role to an inexperienced administrator. It is bringing back a proven college baseball coach and recruiter who previously helped construct some of the best rosters in program history.
