When Lane Kiffin left Ole Miss to accept his new head coaching job with the LSU Tigers before the College Football Playoff, former defensive coordinator Pete Golding was promptly promoted to replace him.
Golding arrived in Oxford before the 2023 season, spending three seasons as DC under Kiffin. And while Kiffin’s departure from the program was somewhat messy, Golding says he has “no ill will” toward his former boss.
“Lane and I are good. I didn’t know him before taking the job [at Ole Miss]. I have no ill will toward Coach Kiffin. He texts me on a regular basis and there’s certain things we’ll talk about, certain things we don’t talk about,” Golding said at SEC Football Kickoff Media Days on Wednesday, via college football insider Brett McMurphy of On3 Sports.
Kiffin left Ole Miss with an 11-1 record heading into the College Football Playoff. With Golding at the helm, the Rebels notched playoff victories over the Tulane Green Wave and Georgia Bulldogs before falling to the Miami Hurricanes in the CFP semifinals.
Now, Golding is heading into his first full season as head coach in Oxford. The Rebels will kickoff their 2026 college football schedule with a matchup against the Louisville Cardinals on Sept. 6.
Kiffin and LSU will begin their season with a highly-anticipated matchup against the Clemson Tigers on Sept. 5.
