Players on expiring or less-than-ideal contracts could be moved, and the Red Sox would plan for the future.
And then they won 15 games in a row.
It tied a franchise record previously achieved in 1946. And more importantly for a number of the players on Boston's roster, the rumors are no more.
For Aroldis Chapman, that means he can settle in for the duration.
There's no way to know for sure what could've taken place around the deadline.
But it's very clear now that the Red Sox won't be getting rid of their closer. They'll need him to chase a spot in October and potentially finish off games once they get there.

Relief pitching is one of the most-moved things during the middle of the season once teams figure out how they're doing.
Boston all of a sudden turned its whole season around, though. Chapman has been getting a lot more save opportunities lately.
That included on Wednesday afternoon, when Chapman notched the 390th save of his career to give the Red Sox their 15th win in a row.
To be fair, that was a simple one for Chapman. The Red Sox had a three-run lead.
All he could do was sit in the dugout for the nightcap as the streak ended prior to claiming the record outright.
Still, it was quite the feat to win 15 games.
And it means a lot for players like Chapman, who know they'll now be wearing a Red Sox uniform the rest of the season.
