BOSTON — Instant reactions from the Red Sox' 6-3 win over the Orioles at Fenway Park in Game 1 of a doubleheader on Wednesday:
1. The Red Sox made history with their 15th consecutive win. They tied the franchise record, joining the 1946 Red Sox, who won 15 in a row from April 25 through May 10 of that season.
It’s the first time a major league team has won 15 or more straight games since the 2021 St. Louis Cardinals, who had a 17-game winning streak from Sept. 11-28 of that season.
2. Interim manager Chad Tracy’s team will try for a new franchise record of 16 straight wins in Game 2 of the doubleheader at 7:10 p.m. Right-hander Kyle Bradish (6-9, 3.61 ERA) will start for the Orioles. The Red Sox have not yet named their starter.
3. Boston has won 20 of its past 22 games, going from 14 games under .500 at 32-46 to four games over .500 at 52-48. It is 6-0 on the homestand after going 17-27 at Fenway Park in the first half.
4. The Sox took a 4-0 lead in the first inning against Orioles right-handed starter Dean Kremer and never trailed. Singles by Masataka Yoshida, Ceddanne Rafaela and Willson Contreras loaded the bases for Caleb Durbin. The third baseman then hit a two-run single. Jarren Duran followed with a two-run triple.
5. Duran had three RBIs. He knocked in Boston’s fifth run with a 344-foot sacrifice fly to center field in the third inning.
6. The Orioles had cut the deficit to 4-1 in the top of the third inning when Ceddanne Rafaela lost a ball in the sun. Tyler O’Neill was credited with an RBI double.
7. Rafaela, a Gold Glover, later made up for losing the ball in the sun. His 377-foot solo home run into the Monster Seats in the fourth inning made it 6-2 Boston. It marked Rafaela’s ninth home run of the season.
8. Red Sox starter Jake Bennett pitched 5 ⅔ innings, allowing three runs, nine hits and no walks while striking out four. He gave up a solo home run to Christian Encarnacion-Strand in the fourth inning.
9. Bennett finished with 14 swings and misses. He recorded seven whiffs with his changeup, two each with his four-seam fastball, cutter and sweeper and one with his sinker. Overall, he threw 83 pitches, 64 for strikes.
10. Justin Slaten recorded the final out of the sixth inning after inheriting a runner at first base. He then pitched a scoreless seventh inning, pitching around a leadoff single. Garrett Whitlock pitched a scoreless eighth inning. Aroldis Chapman recorded his 23rd save with a scoreless ninth.
Chapman allowed a leadoff single to Jackson Holliday but got Chadwick Tromp to ground into a double play.
He walked Taylor Ward to put a runner at first base with two outs. A defensive indifference sent Ward to second base. He got Pete Alonso to ground out to shortstop for the final out.
11. The Red Sox bullpen is 7-0 with a 1.08 ERA (58 ⅓ innings, seven earned runs) and nine saves during the 15-game winning streak.
