The Boston Red Sox optioned left-handed pitcher Eduardo Rivera to Triple-A Worcester following Wednesday night’s 5-1 loss against the Baltimore Orioles. The defeat ended Boston’s franchise-record-tying 15-game winning streak.
Rivera started the second game of the doubleheader but ran into trouble right away, allowing four runs on three hits and two walks while recording only two outs in the first inning. He threw 41 pitches before being removed from the contest.
The loss was Red Sox’s first since a 10-2 setback against the Washington Nationals on July 1. Before the defeat, Boston matched an 80-year-old franchise record by winning 15 consecutive games. The 1946 Red Sox team, led by Ted Williams, also won 15 straight games and reached the American League pennant. This season’s streak was the longest in Major League Baseball since the St. Louis Cardinals also won 15 games in a row in September 2021.

Rivera, 23, made his big league debut this season and appeared in four games, including three starts. He allowed seven earned runs over 10.0 innings while recording 10 strikeouts. In the minor leagues, he compiled a 7-2 record with a 2.44 ERA, allowing 13 earned runs in 48.0 innings with 62 strikeouts across 22 games between Triple-A Worcester and Double-A Portland.
Originally drafted by the Athletics in the 11th round of the 2021 First-Year Player Draft, Rivera signed with Boston as a minor league free agent in June 2024. He owns a 3.57 ERA with 317 strikeouts in 260.0 career minor league innings across 85 appearances, including 42 starts.
With Rivera sent to Worcester, left-hander Alec Gamboa remains with the Red Sox after being added as the 27th player for the second game of the doubleheader. Gamboa provides additional bullpen depth until the organization determines the next rotation option.
